Position Overview: Under the guidance of the Supervisor of Family Preservation, the Family Support Specialist will engage with families aiming for reunification. This role involves conducting parent evaluations and providing educational and supportive services to referred families. While overseeing visitations, the specialist will actively participate in the family service planning process to strengthen bonding and attachment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver therapeutic visitation services for children placed in agency and/or DCYF foster homes, as well as for their parents or designated extended family members. Utilize agency vehicles for transportation to visits, supervise interactions, and provide therapeutic interventions to foster parent-child bonding and teach effective parenting techniques. Collaborate with program workers, DCYF personnel, and families to coordinate visitation schedules that align with DCYF case plan objectives.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments during the initial six weeks of visitation for each assigned case, documenting findings in written reports for the DCYF caseworker. Provide ongoing visitation updates to the caseworker following each scheduled visit.
  • Assist in the routine maintenance of the foster care program's vehicle.
  • Offer a variety of supportive services to agency and DCYF foster families, including service linkage, tailored education and training, and support regarding separation, grief, and loss.
  • Provide case management and supportive services to children in agency and/or DCYF foster homes, which may involve collaboration with various service providers, regular case conferences with DCYF, and referrals for necessary services. Monitor the adjustment and development of children in care, attending medical appointments and other specialist meetings as required.
  • Ensure accurate completion of all required documentation in accordance with agency policies and program guidelines.
  • Prepare timely and precise documentation for family court use, in compliance with program guidelines.
  • Manage a caseload as assigned by the Supervisor of Family Preservation.
  • Meet productivity standards established for the program.
  • Engage respectfully and effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, assisting foster and pre-adoptive parents in promoting personal and cultural identity for the children in their care.
  • Stay informed about agency and community programs, as well as adoption and foster care policies and procedures.
  • Actively participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
  • Collaborate with administrative staff in evaluating agency programs and service delivery.
  • Utilize individual and peer supervision constructively to enhance service effectiveness, participating in weekly team meetings and peer review processes.
  • Contribute to the overall success and quality of the program by working collaboratively with colleagues to address programmatic and agency-wide challenges.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Social Work or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of child welfare, adoption, and foster care practices.
  • Flexibility to work varied hours as needed by the program.
  • Demonstrated time management and relationship-building skills.
  • Familiarity with computer programs, including databases, Word, and email systems.
  • Ability to engage with community members from diverse backgrounds is essential.
  • Valid driver's license, automobile, and auto liability insurance are required.
  • Successful candidates must meet pre-employment background screening requirements.
