Position Purpose

The Financial Aid Specialist is essential in supporting students and their families through the complexities of the financial aid process. This role demands extensive knowledge of Federal Student Aid (FSA) IDs, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the CSS Profile, and various college-related procedures. The ideal candidate will possess meticulous attention to detail and strong communication skills to effectively assist families and staff.

Key Responsibilities

Mandatory Training Participation:
  • Engage in all required training sessions regarding the financial aid process, including updates on FAFSA and changes in financial aid regulations.
Support for FAFSA Completion:
  • Clarify the financial aid process, timeline, and necessary follow-ups, addressing any inquiries from families.
  • Assist families in creating FSA IDs and accurately completing the FAFSA and CSS Profile forms within deadlines.
  • Conduct personalized sessions with families during financial aid events or appointments to explain the financial aid process and provide necessary support.
  • Collaborate with undocumented families to navigate the Rhode Island Student Success Application (RISSA).
Ongoing Communication and Reporting:
  • Maintain regular updates with the Associate Director of College Admissions regarding progress and challenges, fostering collaborative solutions.
  • Keep thorough and organized records of all family interactions, ensuring confidentiality and security of sensitive information.
  • Monitor key metrics as outlined by the organization.
  • Document meeting notes and systematically track outcomes, interactions, and progress with students and families.
  • Stay informed about the latest developments in the financial aid process and promptly relay this information to families as necessary.
Qualifications
  • Bilingual candidates are preferred, with proficiency in Spanish, Cape Verdean Creole, or French.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the financial aid process and hands-on experience with FAFSA and CSS Profile completion.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of conveying complex information clearly and effectively.
  • Outstanding organizational abilities, with the capacity to work independently and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining accurate and confidential records.
  • Availability for one-on-one sessions with families outside of standard business hours to accommodate their needs.
