Position: Mechanical Design Engineer

Type: Contract (12+ months)

Location: Greater Pittsburgh area (Hybrid model)

Role Summary

The Mechanical Design Engineer will serve as a key contributor in the development of mechanical assemblies for cutting-edge Robotics and Automation products. This role involves collaboration within a diverse engineering team to troubleshoot product challenges, devise innovative solutions, conduct testing, and facilitate the transition of designs from the engineering phase to manufacturing and field deployment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical devices and systems incorporating a wide range of components.
  • Analyze design challenges to identify root causes and viable solutions.
  • Conduct feasibility assessments for new and revised designs, applying sound judgment in selecting methodologies and evaluation criteria.
  • Manage design modification projects from inception through to implementation.
  • Ensure designs align with product specifications and requirements, considering factors such as manufacturability, tolerances, and serviceability.
  • Engage in failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) for both system-level and sub-system designs to pinpoint high-risk areas for improvement.
  • Lead root cause analysis initiatives and develop effective corrective actions.
  • Perform engineering verification tests and compile comprehensive test reports.
  • Participate in cross-functional design evaluations.
  • Estimate, oversee, and report on time commitments for multiple concurrent projects.
  • Set and pursue quarterly objectives.
  • Occasionally travel to assess manufacturing or service-related issues.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Expertise in designing complex electromechanical and robotic subassemblies within a structured product development framework.
  • Proficient in CAD software, specifically Creo or SolidWorks.
  • Proven experience in the design of intricate mechanical subassemblies and systems.
  • Familiarity with Bill of Materials, MRP systems, and engineering change processes.
  • Experience in a project leadership capacity.
  • Adept at problem-solving, capable of working independently on sub-assemblies while managing multiple tasks.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication abilities.
  • Self-motivated with the capacity to work autonomously and foster collaborative relationships across teams.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team setting and assist cross-functional teams in resolving complex issues.
  • Results-driven and disciplined, comfortable in a dynamic work environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • At least 5 years of experience in Mechanical Engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience in medical product design and understanding of market dynamics.
  • Familiarity with Agile PLM methodologies.
  • Experience with AutoCAD.
  • Knowledge of robotic systems.
  • Experience conducting tolerance stack-up analysis on complex mechanical assemblies.
  • Understanding of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) principles and software.
  • Experience with DFMEA processes.
  • Background in FDA regulated or ISO13485 environments.
