Role Overview

Operating Room Technicians (ORT) are vital healthcare professionals who support the preparation and care of surgical patients across all age groups, from infants to the elderly, under the guidance of a registered nurse. The ORT is skilled in sterile techniques and possesses a comprehensive understanding of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and the tools and technologies necessary to assist surgeons in performing invasive diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Those who also work in an outpatient setting demonstrate proficiency in caring for surgical patients both before and after procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Entry-Level Technician Responsibilities:

  • Execute all tasks with a focus on Service Excellence towards patients, medical staff, colleagues, and other departments.
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures established by the department and organization.
  • Exhibit a willingness to learn, accept guidance, adapt to changes, and show consistent progress towards advancement.
  • Establish and maintain a sterile environment, ensuring the surgical team adheres to sterile protocols.
  • Demonstrate a foundational understanding of surgical instruments.
  • Prepare the operating room with the necessary instruments, equipment, and supplies.
  • Conduct safe and accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments.
  • Maintain technical skills to effectively serve a diverse patient population.
  • Participate in on-call duties and shift rotations as directed by a registered nurse.
  • For those with dual roles in outpatient settings, additional tasks may include preparing patients for examinations, assisting physicians during procedures, collecting and labeling lab specimens, and providing postoperative instructions under supervision.
  • Progress to the next level within 18 months and perform additional duties as required.

Advanced Technician Responsibilities:

  • Fulfill all responsibilities of the entry-level position, plus:
  • Assist in training newly hired and student technicians.
  • Serve as a mentor to new staff members.
  • Independently maintain a sterile field and ensure compliance with sterile practices.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team effectively.
  • Apply knowledge of surgical instruments across various cases.
  • Demonstrate proper case preparation techniques.
  • Exhibit competence at the unit level and address deficiencies as they arise.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, staff, and physicians.
  • Ensure adherence to all relevant standards, including hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and patient safety protocols.
  • Assume personal responsibility for compliance with operating room and hospital policies.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program or successful passage of the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) certification exam.

Experience:

  • Entry-Level: Ideal for recent graduates or those with up to 18 months of experience.
  • Advanced Level: Requires 6 to 12 months of full-time surgical technology experience or relevant military training.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to adapt to changes within the unit.
  • Capability to work efficiently under pressure in a demanding environment.
  • Knowledge of anatomy related to surgical procedures and the necessary instruments to support the surgical team.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and respond to potentially life-threatening situations.
