Position Summary
Surgical Technologists (ST) are essential allied health professionals responsible for the preparation and care of surgical patients across all age groups, from infants to the elderly, under the guidance of a registered nurse.
The ST is skilled in sterile aseptic techniques and possesses a comprehensive understanding of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and the tools and technologies necessary to assist surgeons during invasive therapeutic and diagnostic operations.
In settings that encompass both operating rooms and ambulatory care, the ST demonstrates proficiency in managing the care of surgical patients both before and after procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain a sterile environment and ensure that all team members adhere to sterile protocols.
- Exhibit a solid understanding of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
- Accurately perform sponge, needle, and instrument counts to ensure patient safety.
- Provide care for a diverse patient population, including infants and geriatric clients.
- Participate in on-call duties and shift rotations as directed by a registered nurse.
For Surgical Technologists working in an ambulatory setting, additional responsibilities may include:
- Preparing patients for examinations and procedures.
- Assisting physicians during patient evaluations and interventions.
- Collecting and labeling laboratory specimens.
- Reinforcing postoperative instructions under the supervision of a physician or registered nurse.
- Handling patient communications and scheduling surgical cases.
Professional Development
New hires are expected to advance to Level II within 18 months, demonstrating increased responsibilities and mentorship roles for new and student technologists.
Qualifications
Education: Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program or equivalent military training.
Experience: Entry-level position for new graduates or those with up to 18 months of experience.
Skills: Ability to work effectively under pressure, adapt to changes, and demonstrate knowledge of surgical procedures and instrumentation.
