Career Opportunities in the Cardiothoracic Unit

The Cardiothoracic Unit at Duke University Hospital offers remarkable opportunities for Surgical Technologists to become integral members of our multidisciplinary team. With a total of 57 operating rooms and a skilled team of surgeons and allied health professionals, we perform a wide range of procedures across all age groups, including:

  • Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG)
  • Valve Surgeries
  • Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD)
  • Aortic Aneurysm Repairs
  • Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)
  • Pediatric Congenital Procedures
  • Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS)
  • Esophagogastrectomy
  • Nissen Fundoplication

Our team also manages all pediatric and adult ECMO cases throughout the hospital, as well as pediatric chest washouts and adult open chest emergencies. Duke Heart is renowned for its comprehensive cardiac care, achieving high survival rates and performing numerous heart procedures, solidifying its status as a leading program in cardiac care.

Role of the Surgical Technologist

Surgical Technologists are vital healthcare professionals who assist in the preparation and care of surgical patients across all age groups under the supervision of a registered nurse. They possess expertise in sterile techniques and have a solid understanding of human anatomy and surgical procedures, which enables them to support surgeons during invasive diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.

Responsibilities

Level I: This entry-level position is for new graduates with up to 18 months of experience. Responsibilities include:

  • Demonstrating Service Excellence towards patients and staff.
  • Maintaining sterile environments and ensuring compliance with departmental policies.
  • Preparing operating rooms with necessary instruments and supplies.
  • Performing accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments.
  • Assisting in the care of patients in both operating room and ambulatory settings.

Level II: In addition to Level I responsibilities, Level II Surgical Technologists are expected to:

  • Assist in training new staff and students.
  • Independently maintain sterile fields and anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and healthcare team members.

Qualifications

Education: Candidates must be graduates of an accredited Surgical Technology program or hold an accredited Surgical Technologist certification.

Experience: Level I is suitable for new graduates or those with minimal experience, while Level II requires 6 to 12 months of relevant experience.
