Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Officer and eDiscovery Manager to join our team at the University of Virginia. As a key member of our Office of the University Counsel, you will be responsible for leading our efforts in FOIA compliance, including responding to requests for public records, and providing education and outreach to the University community on FOIA responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Log and maintain master logs of FOIA requests and other subpoenas or document requests received by the Office of the University Counsel.
  • Calculate response deadlines and ensure compliance with FOIA, court-imposed deadlines, and other standards of law.
  • Work with University offices to implement document holds, issue preservation notices, and gather records to respond to FOIA and other requests.
  • Consult with the Office of University Counsel on determining responsive records and exemptions.
  • Maintain official records related to each FOIA or other document request.
  • Prepare and deliver official University responses to FOIA requests.
  • Manage changes in process to remain compliant with changes in the law.
  • Conduct information and training sessions across Grounds to raise awareness of FOIA responsibilities.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent with at least five to eight years of relevant experience.
  • Superb organizational and time management skills, strong interpersonal skills, and a keen eye for detail.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with University faculty and staff, citizens, and members of the media seeking records.
  • Strong analytical and writing skills with demonstrated ability to collect and analyze information.
  • Able to organize documents and electronically stored information in a concise, logical, and analytical manner.
  • Familiarity with litigation, including the discovery process, preservation notices, and the attorney-client privilege.
  • Knowledge of eDiscovery tools, Adobe Acrobat, and document sharing software/systems.
  • Demonstrated experience performing case analysis, identifying exemptions, and applying redactions.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, work in a team environment, and adjust to established work patterns and processes.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Litigation document handling experience or FOIA Officer experience, ideally in a higher education institution environment.
  • Juris Doctor degree or a paralegal degree or certificate.
