Position Overview

American Conservation Experience (ACE), a nonprofit organization dedicated to conservation efforts, is seeking an Environmental Compliance Associate to collaborate with the New Mexico Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in overseeing and assessing gas and oil operations. This role will involve working closely with Environmental Specialists from the BLM Carlsbad Field Office.

Role Summary:

The BLM Carlsbad Field Office offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in environmental compliance, focusing on the enforcement of state and federal regulations governing gas and oil operations. The selected candidate will assist in various compliance and inspection initiatives. Under the mentorship of BLM professionals, the associate will play a key role in monitoring, inspecting, and ensuring adherence to regulations related to gas and oil development. Additionally, the associate will aid in the preparation of NEPA documentation, ArcGIS mapping, and maintaining records. Participants in this program will have the chance to understand the complexities of land management and environmental regulation, gaining valuable field experience. This position is designed to enhance professional growth and provide networking opportunities within land management agencies.

Work Schedule:
Standard hours are typically Monday to Friday, from 8 AM to 5 PM. Flexibility for occasional weekend and evening work may be required based on project demands.

Compensation and Benefits:

Living Stipend: The ACE Associate is expected to commit approximately 40 hours per week and will receive a living stipend of $800 per week to help cover living expenses, distributed bi-weekly. This stipend is a fixed amount determined by the BLM Carlsbad Field Office and ACE.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Associates serving in this capacity may qualify for federal hiring authority upon completion of their service term. Eligibility criteria apply, including age and citizenship requirements.

Housing: Housing arrangements are the responsibility of the associates and are not provided by ACE or the BLM Carlsbad Field Office.

Travel Reimbursement: ACE Associates will be reimbursed for travel expenses incurred during project work. A relocation allowance of up to $500 is available for the selected candidate.

Training and Orientation: ACE associates will receive specific training related to their position, including an orientation that covers ACE policies, prohibited activities, and available support networks.

Qualifications:

Required:
  • U.S. citizenship or Permanent Residency is mandatory, as per U.S. government contracts.
  • Ability to represent ACE and partner organizations in a professional and positive manner.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently, while also being an effective team member with strong communication skills.
  • A valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
  • Willingness to undergo a two-part criminal history check.
  • Capability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Completion of bi-weekly timesheets and evaluations is required.
  • Flexibility to engage in a variety of tasks, from outdoor manual labor to office-based reporting and mapping.
  • Ability to operate 4x4 vehicles.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
  • Physical Demands: Frequent activities include sitting, standing, walking, hiking, and carrying. Manual dexterity is necessary for tool use and computer operation.
  • Vision Requirements: Close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception vision are required.
  • Weight Handling: Ability to frequently lift up to 25 lbs and occasionally up to 50 lbs.
  • Environmental Conditions: Work may occur in both indoor and outdoor settings, with exposure to varying weather conditions.
  • Noise Levels: Moderate noise typical of an office environment.
  • Travel: Domestic travel may be required for this position.
Safety and Equipment Use:
The ACE associate will be expected to adhere to safety protocols and utilize provided vehicles and equipment responsibly. Personal protective equipment (PPE) will be mandatory for specific tasks.
