At Southwest Research Institute, the Mechanical Systems Section within the Strategic Aerospace Department specializes in providing comprehensive electromechanical engineering support for various programs associated with the US Air Force Global Strike Command and the Department of Defense. Our diverse team of engineers is dedicated to enhancing the capabilities of the warfighter through innovative engineering solutions. We focus on the design, development, and maintenance of both hardware and software systems tailored for the strategic aerospace sector, encompassing everything from microcircuits to significant subsystems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams in executing comprehensive science and engineering projects aimed at bolstering national security.
  • Oversee mechanical design and multi-physics analysis to assist Department of Defense clients in the sustainment and modernization of legacy systems used in flight, ground support, testing, and maintenance.
  • Drive internal R&D efforts to explore new technologies applicable to national defense. Engage in marketing and business development initiatives with clients.
  • Mentor junior mechanical engineers by providing detailed work instructions, design best practices, and constructive feedback.
  • Offer subject matter expertise during design peer reviews and internal R&D discussions, covering areas such as aerospace mechanical design, manufacturing assessments, and system integration.
Daily and Monthly Tasks:
  • Develop mechanical requirements specifications, create mechanical solid models, and produce fabrication/assembly drawings, performance test procedures, and operational guidelines.
  • Conduct analyses including structural, thermal, dynamic, and dimensional tolerance assessments to ensure design capabilities meet stringent requirements.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and project leaders to present findings, share data, guide design decisions, and document milestones through technical reports.
  • Support hardware testing to validate prototype performance under extreme conditions.
  • Initiate and conduct internal research to advance mechanical technologies that serve the warfighter and enhance national security.
Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Mechatronics Engineering is required.
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience is needed, showcasing self-motivation, strong organizational skills, technical writing proficiency, and effective communication.
  • 8 years of experience in mechanical design development processes and analysis-based design verification/validation is essential.
  • 8 years of experience in developing mechanical solid models using commercial 3D/2D CAD software (Solidworks preferred, but other programs are acceptable).
  • 5 years of experience in validating mechanical designs with commercial FEA or multiphysics simulation tools (e.g., ANSYS, Solidworks Simulation) and analytical programming software (e.g., Excel, Matlab, Python).
  • A valid driver's license is mandatory.
