Position Overview
The purpose of this position is to serve as a liaison between patients, payers, and healthcare team members. You will be responsible for facilitating patient tracking and billing by obtaining and verifying accurate demographic information, securing financial responsibility, and collecting out-of-pocket payments from guarantors to maximize hospital reimbursement.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain compliance with regulatory requirements, including EMTALA, DNV, and HIPAA, in the Admissions setting and handling of medical records.
- Provide exceptional customer service by effectively meeting customer needs, understanding customer expectations, and building quality relationships.
- Answer phone calls in a professional and courteous manner, record messages, and communicate with the medical staff.
- Obtain and verify signatures on required forms and consents.
- Enter complete and accurate demographic information on all accounts to facilitate smooth processing through the revenue cycle.
- Verify insurance benefits for all plans associated with patients, confirming the correct payor and plan is entered into the patient accounting system.
- Obtain insurance authorizations as required by individual insurance plans.
- Maximize the efficiency and accuracy of the collection process by pursuing collections at the time of service in a customer service-oriented fashion.
- Scan all registration and clinical documentation into the system and maintain all medical records.
- Assist with coordinating patient transfers to other hospitals when necessary.
- Respond to medical record requests from patients, physicians, and hospitals.
- Maintain a cash drawer according to policies.
- Maintain logs of patient information, payments received, transfers, and hospital admissions.
Additional Responsibilities
- Maintain a clean and organized working environment, including the front desk, restroom, waiting room, break area, and patient rooms.
- Receive and forward mail and packages to the appropriate departments.
- Notify the facilities team of any equipment malfunctions or maintenance needs.
- Attend staff meetings and other company-sponsored or mandated meetings as required.
- Assist medical staff as needed.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
- 1 year of patient registration and insurance verification experience in a healthcare setting, required; 2 years preferred.
- Emergency Department registration experience, strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of various insurance plans and payors, required.
- Basic understanding of medical terminology.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Working knowledge of MS Office (MS Word, Excel, and Outlook), strongly preferred.
- Fluency in English, written and oral communication.
