Overview:

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is a premier interdisciplinary research and development institution with a rich history of over 80 years in addressing significant environmental challenges. Our mission is to enhance scientific understanding and create innovative solutions that support sustainable management of the Earth’s resources. Our team of scientists engages in cutting-edge research, technology development, and analytical assessments to explore the interactions between environmental systems and human activities, as well as the implications of various energy and environmental strategies.

Key Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be tasked with:

  • Crafting and assessing models for gray and green infrastructure utilizing Amanzi-ATS, a sophisticated process-based hydrologic model.
  • Applying these models to investigate the impacts of climate change, land use alterations, and infrastructure development scenarios on flooding risks in Southeast Texas over the upcoming decades.
  • Designing hypothesis-driven numerical experiments to analyze the evolving risks of compound flooding, integrating data and hydrologic process insights with modeling efforts, and authoring publications to disseminate findings.
  • Collaborating with local stakeholders and design experts to co-create flood mitigation strategies and evaluate their effectiveness through modeling, thereby informing regional climate and flood management initiatives.
  • Upholding ORNL's mission by aligning actions and priorities with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service, while promoting a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in hydrology, applied mathematics, civil/environmental engineering, or a closely related discipline, obtained within the last five years.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: flood modeling, integrated surface-subsurface hydrologic modeling, effects of green or gray infrastructure on hydrology, coastal water cycle modeling, or high-performance computing.
  • Proficiency in using hydrologic or hydrodynamic models is essential; experience in model development is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with programming languages such as C++ and Fortran for model development, along with Python or GIS for model evaluation, is beneficial.
  • Experience in processing and utilizing large, complex datasets is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A self-motivated individual capable of working independently and contributing creatively within collaborative teams.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic research environment, prioritize tasks effectively, and adapt to changing demands.

Candidates must have completed all PhD requirements prior to starting the appointment, which may last up to 24 months with potential for extension based on performance and funding availability.
