Position Overview:

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is a premier interdisciplinary research institution dedicated to advancing environmental science and technology. Key Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be tasked with:

  • Creating and assessing models of both gray and green infrastructure utilizing Amanzi-ATS, a sophisticated process-based hydrologic modeling tool.
  • Utilizing these models to investigate the impacts of climate change, land use alterations, and infrastructure development scenarios on flooding patterns in Southeast Texas over the upcoming decades.
  • Formulating hypothesis-driven numerical experiments to analyze the evolving risks associated with compound flooding, integrating data and hydrologic process insights with modeling efforts, and authoring publications to disseminate findings.
  • Engaging with local stakeholders and design experts to collaboratively develop flood mitigation strategies, while assessing their effectiveness through modeling to inform regional climate adaptation and flood management initiatives.

Required Qualifications:

  • A PhD in hydrology, applied mathematics, civil/environmental engineering, or a closely related discipline, completed within the last five years.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: flood modeling, integrated surface-subsurface hydrologic modeling, effects of infrastructure on the water cycle, coastal hydrology, or high-performance computing.
  • Proficiency in using hydrologic or hydrodynamic models is essential; experience in model development is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with programming languages such as C++ and Fortran for model development, along with Python or GIS for model evaluation, is preferred.
  • Experience in processing and analyzing large datasets is beneficial.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A proactive self-starter capable of working independently and contributing creatively within collaborative teams.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic research environment, prioritize tasks effectively, and adapt to changing project needs.
