Job Overview

The Human Geography Group at ITR is in search of skilled candidates for the role of Demographic Data Analyst. This position involves collaborating with a diverse team of researchers, engineers, and technologists to enhance existing workflows related to population and building occupancy data. Your contributions will be pivotal in advancing population modeling research that supports essential national security initiatives.

As a successful candidate, you will engage in complex, interdisciplinary projects aimed at deepening our comprehension of human interactions with various environments—virtual, natural, and constructed. Addressing challenges linked to national security, you will employ geospatial analysis and demographic insights to examine the connections between the characteristics of built environments and human population densities over time and space.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Assist in the systematic creation and refinement of population models applicable to various facility types globally, spanning local to regional scales.
  2. Utilize a wide array of open-source data, including census data, surveys, and user-generated content, to develop building occupancy and population distribution datasets.
  3. Apply statistical and computational techniques to improve the spatial, temporal, and demographic precision of our analyses and models.
  4. Support the review and enhancement of quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods for updating statistical building occupancy models in light of newly available open-source data.
  5. Contribute to the design of tools and processes that automate the collection of open-source data, thereby increasing accessibility and visibility of population models to stakeholders.
  6. Engage in team publications, attend conferences, and collaborate with scientists, technicians, and analysts across various sectors, including academia and government.
Basic Qualifications
  1. A Master's degree or higher in Geography, Demography, or a related field.
  2. Experience in analyzing census statistics, microdata, and other structured or unstructured datasets.
  3. Proficiency in geospatial analysis using open-source or commercial tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or PostGIS.
  4. Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods focusing on sociocultural and economic dynamics within built environments.
  5. Experience in open-source data mining and collection methodologies.
  6. Familiarity with remote sensing and image analysis techniques.
  7. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  8. A proven ability to work effectively within a team setting.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Background in research related to diverse cultures and cultural practices globally.
  2. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R for statistical analysis.
  3. Experience with social media data analysis or time series data.
  4. Expertise in remote sensing, including multispectral and hyperspectral data analysis.
  5. Fluency in additional languages or knowledge of key phrases for open-source data collection.
  6. A demonstrated history of research evidenced by peer-reviewed publications.
  7. Experience leading collaborative research efforts.
