Job Overview

Position Summary

The Laboratory Technician is tasked with the acquisition and processing of biological samples, accurate data entry into the Laboratory Information System (LIS), preparation of specimens for testing, and the distribution of samples to designated testing areas. This role involves prioritizing daily tasks based on the urgency of requests. Additionally, the Laboratory Technician is responsible for conducting point-of-care testing as assigned and performing therapeutic phlebotomy procedures. This position also encompasses clerical duties related to post-analytical testing and effective communication with colleagues using various tools. The technician must handle biohazardous and infectious materials while adhering to universal precautions and safety regulations.


Key Responsibilities

Sample Acquisition
* Conducts sample collection and patient preparation, ensuring accurate patient and specimen identification in accordance with established protocols.

Labels specimens correctly at the point of care, following the Final Check protocol.

Collects blood cultures using aseptic techniques to avoid contamination.

Obtains blood bank specimens in line with blood bank procedures.

Implements infection control measures, utilizing universal precautions.

Confirms specimen and patient requirements prior to collection.

Maintains specimen integrity through appropriate handling techniques (e.g., protection from light and temperature control).

Sample Processing
* Inputs specimens into the LIS, selecting the correct location, date, and time of service.

Distributes specimens within the laboratory, announcing urgent cases as necessary.

Utilizes two identifiers to re-label and initial specimens with generated labels.

Maintains an organized processing area and prioritizes upcoming draw times based on collection urgency (e.g., RT, STAT, TM, ASAP, AM) when working in the main laboratory.

Manages the specimen pending list throughout the shift and communicates follow-ups with the subsequent shift.

Aliquots and labels specimens according to departmental procedures when required.

Properly plates microbiological specimens as needed.

Assesses specimen quality and takes necessary actions for unacceptable samples.

Identifies and suggests improvements to enhance cost-efficiency, productivity, and service quality.

Performs additional technical support tasks as directed by laboratory management.

Data Management
* Inputs data into the LIS to ensure precise documentation and billing.

Navigates through the electronic health record system to print patient requisitions and confirm scheduled studies.

Determines when to perform quick registrations, full registrations, or client billing.

Demonstrates proficiency in using applicable software tools.

Completes documentation legibly and accurately per site protocols, using appropriate records for communications.

When necessary, places specimens into recollect status or cancels with proper documentation.

Pulls up a daily fax list and ensures timely completion of faxes.

Monitors a pending list and discusses updates during shift changes.

Verifies patient demographics, insurance, and diagnostic test information for all outpatient and outreach services.

Accurately logs specimens into the designated locations.

Compliance and Safety
* Responsible for promptly reporting any safety-related incidents through the designated reporting tool; participates in all safety training programs; performs work safely; monitors the work environment for potential safety issues and ensures compliance among colleagues.

Stays informed and adheres to state and federal regulations, as well as company policies that affect the employee's responsibilities.

If required, ensures all certifications and licenses are current and valid prior to expiration.

Completes all mandatory training modules and job-specific training within the required timeframe.

Capable of monitoring patients for unexpected reactions and responding to emergencies as necessary.


Qualifications

Education
High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) - Required


Certifications & Licenses
Lab Assistant 2
National Phlebotomy Certification - Required

Employee will maintain appropriate clinical competencies as assigned by their departmental leader.


Experience
Completion of an approved phlebotomy training program - Preferred

Minimum of 1 year of experience in a laboratory setting - Preferred
