Overview:

The Political Science Department at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit institution, is seeking applications for a limited number of Adjunct Faculty positions to instruct undergraduate courses in areas such as international law, international security, comparative politics, and US Politics. Teaching assignments will be aligned with the qualifications of the candidate and departmental needs. The university operates on a quarter system, with each quarter lasting 10 weeks, followed by an 11th week for final evaluations. The selected candidate will be responsible for teaching a maximum of two courses per quarter and no more than four courses across the academic year. This is an applicant pool; positions will be filled as required. Instruction is expected to be conducted face-to-face on campus, although hybrid or online teaching may be necessary based on health guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

(1) A PhD in Political Science or a closely related discipline is strongly preferred. Candidates who are ABD or hold a master's degree in Political Science with relevant teaching experience (5-7 years) may also be considered.

(2) Proven excellence in teaching Political Science at the collegiate level.

(3) Strong communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience with inclusive teaching practices that promote diversity and equity.
  • Experience in teaching and mentoring a diverse student body.

TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES:

(1) Instruction (100%)

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

a. Teaching no more than two courses per quarter and four courses per academic year;

b. Attending all scheduled class meetings prepared to deliver course content effectively;

c. Assigning and grading coursework that aligns with course objectives, providing timely feedback to students;

d. Holding regular office hours for student support;

e. Submitting accurate and fair student grades to the Registrar by the designated deadline;

f. Administering evaluations for all courses;

g. Teaching from an approved syllabus or collaborating with the department chair to create a suitable syllabus for approval.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This position does not require service duties, although attendance at departmental meetings may be invited but is not mandatory.
