Job Overview:

** Experience in a Special Education setting required. **

**Positions are 6 hours a day (30 hours per week) for a 9.5 month school year, and include benefits.**

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the supervision of an assigned leader, deliver focused behavioral intervention instruction; track and communicate student progress concerning behavior and academic performance; perform various clerical and supportive tasks related to tutoring and educational activities.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Provide educational support and direction to students with Autism and/or similar behavioral challenges; implement initiatives, practices, and strategies to fulfill individual Individualized Education Plan (IEP) objectives; ensure activities adhere to established guidelines.

2. Assist with the physical handling of students as necessary, including moving students in wheelchairs; position students according to learning tasks and provide various forms of personal care such as toileting, dressing, grooming, and feeding; ensure the safe use of mobility aids and other equipment.

3. Monitor and document student progress daily regarding behavior and academic performance; assist students and families with the implementation of IEP training and programs through instruction in various activities; provide behavioral support to guide students in critical life skills, play skills, pre-academic learning, physical development, social communication, and personal hygiene.

4. Administer routine first aid, including emergency care for students experiencing seizures or respiratory issues; maintain daily records of specialized health care services and procedures as assigned.

5. Present a variety of instructional materials and learning aids; adapt materials, rephrase content, and clarify instructions and terminology.

6. Perform clerical and supportive tasks related to tutoring and educational activities, including typing, duplicating materials, and filing; track student progress; collect and record data.

7. Support students by organizing work areas, displays, and exhibits; operate and assist students in using audio-visual, assistive, and training equipment.

8. Implement assigned components of student behavior management plans, which may involve approved behavior modification techniques or other skills to maintain appropriate behaviors; supervise and manage student conduct according to established policies.

9. Assist students with special learning needs in practice and study activities; guide students into safe learning experiences; maintain a structured, engaging, and positive learning environment.

10. Uphold the confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with established protocols.

11. Ensure the health and safety of students by adhering to health and safety practices.

12. Participate in staff meetings, training programs, and parent conferences as assigned; collaborate with special education staff regarding programs, services, operations, and related information.

13. Operate various audio-visual equipment, electronic teaching devices, and office machinery including typewriters, copiers, and computers.

14. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

EDUCATION: Proof of education meeting State and Federal requirements is required and may be satisfied in one of the following ways:
- Completion of at least two years of study (minimum 48 semester hours) at an institution of higher education
- Possession of an Associate's (or higher) degree from an accredited US college institution.
OR
- Passing the District's local assessment demonstrating the knowledge and ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics at a level meeting state and federal requirements.

EXPERIENCE:
- One year of experience working with students requiring specialized behavior support (such as those with autism and/or behavioral disorders). A valid Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) Certification can substitute for the required year(s) of experience.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid certifications of First Aid, Adult/Child CPR, and AED must be obtained within the first six months of employment or submitted at the time of application. Only certifications provided by American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or District approved providers will be accepted. Online certifications will be accepted from these vendors as long as a hands-on skills assessment is completed.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Behavioral characteristics of students with significant special needs.
- Child guidance principles and practices related to special education.
- Basic subjects taught in District schools including arithmetic, reading, writing, grammar, and spelling.
- Safe practices in classroom activities.
- Basic instructional methods and techniques.
- Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
- Oral and written communication skills.
- Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
- Basic record-keeping techniques.

ABILITY TO:
- Provide instruction and related guidance activities in a classroom or assigned learning environment.
- Monitor and report student progress regarding behavior and performance.
- Perform various clerical and supportive duties related to tutoring and educational activities.
- Reinforce instruction to students with Autism and/or similar behavioral challenges.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
- Work independently with minimal direction.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Understand and work within the scope of authority.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Sitting on the floor to work with students. Bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching to assist students. Hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations. Seeing to read assignments and monitor student activities. Lifting students with significant disabilities in and out of wheelchairs. Managing aggressive student behavior. Carrying, pushing, or pulling to assist students in wheelchairs.

HAZARDS:
Potential exposure to communicable diseases and contact with bodily fluids. Potential exposure to physical injury from aggressive behavior.
