BEHAVIOR SUPPORT SPECIALIST

Purpose Statement:

The role of the Behavior Support Specialist is designed to implement and demonstrate evidence-based interventions tailored for Autism Spectrum Disorders and other related behavioral and language challenges, in accordance with established Individual Education Plans (IEP). This position aims to support district personnel and assist students in reaching their academic, social, emotional, and behavioral objectives.

This position reports to the Principal or their designated representative.

Essential Functions

1. Modifies classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the teacher's guidance to ensure all special education students can engage in classroom tasks.

2. Aids in the creation, execution, and demonstration of behavioral and instructional support strategies to address individual student requirements and reinforce learning activities.

3. Assists in preparing and adjusting instructional resources to provide engaging activities that enhance student learning and performance.

4. Supports the training of staff, parents, and students in specialized instructional techniques to disseminate information and strategies utilized in behavior intervention.

5. Aids in data collection and assessments related to behavior support services to monitor and report progress on set goals.

6. Implements and exemplifies alternative communication strategies to facilitate effective student communication.

7. Applies social skill development methods, including social narratives, peer support, and peer mentoring, to help students achieve their academic, social, emotional, and behavioral objectives.

8. Executes behavioral plans formulated by the IEP team for students with behavioral disorders or unique conditions to ensure the needs of special education students are met within a consistent environment.

9. Monitors and documents academic and behavioral data to assess student progress in targeted areas.

10. Participates in professional development programs as directed to acquire new skills pertinent to working with students with disabilities and their peers.

11. Reports observations and incidents concerning specific students (e.g., conflicts, inappropriate social conduct) to provide documentation and communicate relevant information to appropriate personnel.

12. Supervises students during assemblies, field trips, lunch, recess, and in hallways and grounds to maximize their independence and integration within the school setting.

13. Travels to various school sites as necessary to deliver services across different locations.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

SKILLS: Ability to perform multiple non-technical tasks with a potential need for skill enhancement to adapt to evolving job conditions. Required skills include experience and/or education equivalent to one year in behavior support for autism and instructional methodologies.

KNOWLEDGE: Proficiency in basic mathematics, including calculations with fractions, percentages, and ratios; ability to read various manuals, write documents following established formats, and present information to others; understanding of complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge includes instructional methodologies and practices for students with pervasive developmental disorders, data collection techniques, and behavioral principles.

ABILITY: Capable of scheduling activities and meetings, gathering, collating, and classifying data, and utilizing job-related equipment. Flexibility is essential to collaborate with diverse individuals and groups, work with various data processes, and operate equipment using standardized methods. Specific abilities include learning structured teaching principles, understanding the impact of pervasive developmental disorders on learning, assisting in developing and implementing behavioral support plans, training staff, parents, and students in specialized instructional strategies, preparing and adapting materials to enhance student performance, collecting and maintaining data, and communicating effectively both orally and in writing.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities encompass working under direct supervision using standardized procedures, providing information and advising others, and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of resources from other work units may be necessary to fulfill job functions, with a continual opportunity to influence the organization’s services.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job entails 50% sitting, 25% walking, and 25% standing. The work is performed under minimal temperature variations and may involve some hazardous conditions.

Experience in a related field is required.

Education: Targeted job-related education that meets the organization's prerequisite requirements.

Certificates & Licenses

48 college credits, an AA degree, or the ability to demonstrate college-level skills by passing a proficiency exam. A valid CA driver's license, proof of insurability, and access to personal transportation are also required.
