Library Operations Custodian

The New York Public Library (NYPL) has been a cornerstone of free access to books, information, and education for over a century. Our neighborhood libraries, particularly in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island, are evolving into dynamic centers of educational innovation and community engagement, offering much more than just free resources.
NYPL is looking for an **Entry-Level Library Maintenance Associate** to ensure a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for our patrons and staff.
Location: Manhattan
Compensation: $33,599 / year
Department: Facilities
Employment Type: Full Time
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain cleanliness and upkeep of the Library premises and surrounding areas.
- Perform floor care tasks including buffing, stripping, and waxing.
- Shampoo carpets to ensure a fresh and tidy appearance.
- Replace light bulbs as needed.
- Assist with snow removal during winter months.
- Prepare maintenance reports and keep track of cleaning supplies inventory.
- Act promptly to secure the building during emergencies and report issues to the appropriate personnel.
- Regularly communicate with the Library Manager to assess branch requirements.
- Travel between assigned branches as necessary.
- Work at multiple locations as required.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise:
- High School Diploma or GED with prior experience in custodial or building maintenance roles.
- Proven knowledge of standard practices, materials, and equipment used in commercial cleaning.
- Familiarity with material safety data sheets and safety protocols.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated reliability and adaptability.
- Ability to perform physical tasks including cleaning, heavy lifting, and working at heights.
- Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
- Must successfully pass a physical examination.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in mixing cleaning chemicals according to specifications.
- Knowledge of operating commercial cleaning equipment.

Physical Duties:
Moderate to extensive physical effort is required, including bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 50 lbs. Travel to various Library locations may be necessary.

Hours: 40 hours per week, including evenings and weekends as required. Schedule may vary.
