Job Title: Electrical Instrument Repair Technician

General Overview

Under general supervision, this role involves performing skilled tasks related to the repair, testing, and upkeep of various equipment at District facilities. This includes plant process control apparatus, power distribution networks, and voice and data communication systems, including telemetry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts skilled work in the repair, calibration, commissioning, configuration, testing, and maintenance of process instrumentation.
  • Employs a range of testing equipment to analyze and troubleshoot power distribution, process control, and communication systems, along with other necessary equipment.
  • Repairs and calibrates various instruments or analyzers utilized for measuring water levels, precipitation, temperature, flow rates, pH, dissolved oxygen, density, steam quality, power, air quality, vibration, proximity, cable location, and water quality.
  • Maintains and repairs equipment responsible for transmitting and receiving signals for plant process control.
  • Responsible for the upkeep and repair of measurement sensing units.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains protective relays and portable communication devices.
  • Assesses breakdown voltage characteristics on insulators, cables, and other circuit components.
  • Utilizes hand tools and equipment essential for detailed work typical of this trade.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Accountable for the custody and maintenance of all tools and equipment used in electrical instrument repair and testing.
  • Performs other assigned duties as necessary.

Working Conditions

Typical duties involve exposure to industrial equipment or operations, including working near operational mechanical equipment and high noise levels. Responsibilities may also include working in close proximity to construction activities. Work may be conducted in various weather conditions and could involve confined spaces or elevated heights. Duties may entail contact with hazardous materials and exposure to unpleasant odors. Some positions may require operating a District vehicle.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of the operational and repair procedures for a wide range of electric, electronic, or mechanical process instrumentation, including fiber optics and radio communication devices.
  • Significant knowledge in testing and calibrating equipment and relays for power distribution systems.
  • Awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with the work, particularly regarding low, medium, and high voltage equipment.
  • Proficiency in operating computers necessary for equipment configuration, maintaining essential databases, and documenting work performed and materials utilized.
  • Expertise in the repair and calibration of process instrumentation and automated systems, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
  • Competence in the use and maintenance of tools and equipment pertinent to the trade.
  • Ability to interpret basic electrical prints and schematics (such as contract drawings or basic equipment diagrams).
  • Capability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent, along with four years of experience in the repair and calibration of electronic process instrumentation.

Substitution Policy

Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis. College-level or other approved post-secondary training in instrumentation technology, electrical/electronics technology, or electronic engineering technology may also be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
