Job Title: Chief of Human Resources

Department: Human Resources

Location: Flexible options available, including remote work. This role may require occasional travel.

Reports To: Chief People Officer

Supervises: Up to 5 direct reports

Scope: In collaboration with the Chief People Officer and the Director of Employee Experience, the Chief of Human Resources will oversee the management of compensation, benefits, employee relations, and performance management systems.

The Chief will mentor and lead the HR team, promoting a culture of feedback and accountability while ensuring the successful execution of essential HR functions.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the Human Resources Function: Collaborate with leadership to define departmental objectives and strategic initiatives. Stay informed about industry trends, best practices, and legal developments in HR and apply this knowledge to inform policy changes. Assist in budget development for the HR department.
  • Manage HR Operations: Oversee the administration of compensation, benefits, and HR information systems. Respond to information requests and work closely with various departments to support cross-functional initiatives. Ensure compliance with employment laws and regulations, updating policies as necessary.
  • Oversee Employee Relations and Investigations: Work with stakeholders to create effective strategies for handling employee relations issues and investigations. Identify areas for improvement in these processes and address complex employee concerns with sensitivity and confidentiality.
  • Foster a Positive Organizational Culture: Promote the core values of the Sierra Club and contribute to a culture that emphasizes belonging, dignity, and justice. Support team development and facilitate constructive dialogue among staff.
  • Supervise the HR Team: Build a collaborative and service-oriented HR team that delivers effective and compassionate HR solutions. Establish clear expectations, provide ongoing training, and conduct performance evaluations for team members.
Qualifications:
  • Extensive HR Experience: Proven track record in various HR functions, particularly in large organizations. Senior-level HR certification is preferred.
  • Strong Interpersonal Skills: Ability to build trusting relationships across all levels of the organization. High emotional intelligence and collaborative approach are essential.
  • Experience in Team Management: Demonstrated ability to lead diverse teams and develop organization-wide HR initiatives. Experience in maintaining a supportive workplace culture.
  • Discretion and Judgment: High level of discretion when handling sensitive information and a solid understanding of confidentiality requirements.
  • Commitment to Growth: Willingness to engage in ongoing learning about systems of oppression and personal privilege.
  • Positive Attitude: A constructive mindset that views challenges as opportunities for improvement.
  • Knowledge of Employment Laws: Comprehensive understanding of current federal and state employment regulations.
