Role Summary

The Patient Care Technician - Float embodies the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Memorial Healthcare, adhering to our Code of Ethics and Compliance Program while following all relevant policies and standards.

This role requires specialized knowledge related to the needs of patients in rehabilitation, particularly those with chronic conditions and disabilities. The Patient Care Technician collaborates with an interdisciplinary rehabilitation care team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide basic nursing care under the supervision of a registered nurse, including monitoring vital signs and recording patient data.
  • Assist patients with personal care and daily living activities, such as bathing, grooming, and nutrition.
  • Support patients in using assistive devices and prosthetics according to their individual care plans.
  • Implement preventive skin care measures as directed and promptly report any changes to nursing staff.
  • Facilitate patient mobility and transfers using appropriate techniques and equipment.
  • Assist with bladder and bowel management programs, including specimen collection.
  • Conduct 12-lead EKGs as required.
  • Help patients complete meal selections within designated timeframes.
  • Deliver meal trays and snacks under the guidance of nursing staff.
  • Engage in patient rounding to monitor overall patient well-being.
  • Utilize de-escalation techniques for managing patient behaviors when necessary.
  • Maintain and organize inventory of unit equipment.
  • Report any significant changes in patient conditions to nursing personnel.
  • Ensure patient rooms are kept clean and orderly.
  • Demonstrate adaptability, organization, and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Employ critical thinking skills to prioritize and complete tasks efficiently as unit needs evolve.
  • Act as a liaison between patient care units and other related departments.
  • Respond to communication devices in a courteous manner, relaying information to the appropriate parties.
  • Assist with daily admission and discharge processes as needed.
Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Nursing students who have completed two clinical rotations.
  • If not a nursing student, one of the following qualifications is necessary: Certified Nursing Experience, Medical Assistant, EMT, or Paramedic.
  • Current CPR certification – Basic Life Support.

Preferred:

  • Completion of an accredited Nursing Assistant program.
