Position SummaryThe Patient Care Technician - Float embodies the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Memorial Healthcare, adhering to our Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program. This role is essential in providing care to patients with chronic conditions and disabilities within a rehabilitation framework.
Under the guidance of a registered nurse, the Patient Care Technician assists patients with daily living activities, mobility support, and ensures a safe and hygienic environment. This position requires specialized skills, including de-escalation techniques and proficiency in 12-lead EKGs. The Patient Care Technician actively participates in quality improvement initiatives, which may involve data collection and equipment management.
Key Responsibilities- Provide basic nursing care as directed by an RN, including monitoring vital signs and recording patient data.
- Assist patients with personal care tasks, such as bathing, grooming, and eating.
- Support patients in using assistive devices and prosthetics as per their individual care plans.
- Implement preventive skin care measures and promptly report any changes to nursing staff.
- Facilitate patient mobility and transfers using safe techniques and equipment.
- Assist with bladder and bowel programs, including specimen collection.
- Conduct 12-lead EKGs as required.
- Help patients complete meal selections within designated timeframes.
- Deliver meal trays and snacks under the supervision of nursing staff.
- Engage in patient rounding to monitor well-being.
- Utilize de-escalation strategies for managing challenging patient behaviors.
- Maintain and organize unit equipment inventories.
- Report any abnormal findings or changes in patient conditions to nursing personnel.
- Ensure patient rooms are kept clean and orderly.
- Demonstrate adaptability, organizational skills, and the ability to multitask in high-pressure situations.
- Employ critical thinking to prioritize and complete tasks efficiently based on unit needs.
- Act as a liaison between patient care units and other related departments.
- Answer calls and inquiries with professionalism, relaying information to appropriate staff or family members.
- Assist with daily admission and discharge processes as needed.
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D).
- Nursing students who have completed two clinical rotations.
- If not a nursing student, candidates must possess one of the following qualifications:
- Certified Nursing Experience
- Medical Assistant Certification
- EMT Certification
- Paramedic Certification
- Current CPR certification (Basic Life Support).
Preferred:
- Completion of an accredited Nursing Assistant program.
