Position SummaryThe Patient Care Technician - Float plays a crucial role in embodying the mission and values of Northwestern Memorial Healthcare. This position requires adherence to the organization's ethical standards and compliance with all relevant policies and regulations.
The Patient Care Technician possesses specialized knowledge to address the needs of patients in rehabilitation settings, particularly those with chronic conditions and disabilities. As a vital member of the interdisciplinary rehabilitation care team, the technician provides essential support under the supervision of a registered nurse.
Key Responsibilities- Assist with basic nursing care tasks as directed by an RN, including monitoring vital signs and recording patient data.
- Support patients with personal care and daily living activities, such as bathing, grooming, and eating.
- Facilitate the use of assistive devices and prosthetics according to individual patient needs.
- Implement preventive skin care protocols as instructed by the RN and promptly report any changes.
- Assist patients with mobility and transfer activities using appropriate techniques and equipment.
- Support bladder and bowel management programs, including specimen collection.
- Conduct 12-lead EKGs as required.
- Help patients complete meal selections within designated timeframes.
- Deliver meal trays and snacks under the guidance of nursing staff.
- Engage in patient rounding to monitor well-being.
- Provide de-escalation support for patients exhibiting agitated behaviors.
- Maintain and organize unit equipment inventories.
- Report any abnormal findings or changes in patient conditions to nursing staff.
- Assist in keeping patient rooms tidy and organized.
- Demonstrate flexibility and effective multitasking in a fast-paced environment.
- Utilize critical thinking to prioritize and manage unit tasks efficiently.
- Act as a liaison between patient care units and other departments.
- Respond to calls and inquiries with professionalism and courtesy.
- Assist with unit workflow management in collaboration with the charge RN.
- Perform daily admission and discharge validations as needed.
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D).
- Nursing students who have completed two clinical rotations.
- If not a nursing student, candidates must have one of the following qualifications:
- Certified Nursing Experience
- Medical Assistant
- EMT
- Paramedic
- Current CPR certification (Basic Life Support).
Preferred:
- Completion of an accredited Nursing Assistant program.
