This role requires specialized knowledge to address the needs of patients in rehabilitation settings, particularly those with chronic conditions and disabilities. As a vital member of the interdisciplinary rehabilitation care team, the Patient Care Technician plays a crucial role in patient care.

Under the guidance and supervision of a registered nurse, the Patient Care Technician assists patients with daily living activities, mobility, and maintaining a safe and clean environment. This position also involves technical skills such as de-escalation techniques and performing 12-lead EKGs. The Patient Care Technician actively participates in quality improvement projects, including data collection and equipment maintenance.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct basic nursing care tasks as delegated by an RN, including monitoring vital signs and recording patient data.
  • Assist patients with personal care and daily living activities, such as bathing and grooming.
  • Support patients in using assistive devices and prosthetics as per their individual care plans.
  • Implement preventive skin care measures as directed by the RN and report any skin integrity issues.
  • Facilitate patient transfers and mobility with appropriate techniques and equipment.
  • Assist with bladder and bowel programs, including specimen collection.
  • Perform 12-lead EKGs as required.
  • Help patients complete their meal selections within designated timeframes.
  • Deliver meal trays and snacks under the nurse's direction.
  • Engage in patient rounding to monitor and support patient needs.
  • Utilize de-escalation techniques for managing agitated patient behaviors.
  • Maintain and organize unit equipment inventories.
  • Report any abnormal findings or changes in patient conditions to nursing staff.
  • Ensure patient rooms are kept clean and orderly.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and the ability to multi-task in high-pressure situations.
  • Employ critical thinking skills to prioritize and complete tasks efficiently as unit needs evolve.
  • Act as a liaison between patient care units and other departments.
  • Respond to calls and inquiries with professionalism and relay information to the appropriate personnel.
  • Assist in managing unit workflow in collaboration with the charge RN or assistant manager.
  • Perform daily admission and discharge validations as needed.
Qualifications:

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D).
  • Nursing students who have completed two clinical rotations.
  • If not a nursing student, candidates must have one of the following qualifications:
    • Certified Nursing Experience
    • Medical Assistant
    • EMT
    • Paramedic
  • CPR Certification – Basic Life Support.

Preferred:

  • Completion of an accredited Nursing Assistant program.
