Position Summary:

This role involves executing specialized paraprofessional responsibilities within the Circulation Services team at the Library. The Library Specialist will oversee assigned Library Assistants and volunteers, exemplifying exceptional customer service while collaborating with fellow staff to support Library operations. This position provides leadership and direction to Circulation Services personnel through supervision, training, performance assessment, and staff meetings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead, supervise, mentor, and evaluate assigned staff
  • Establish and maintain patron accounts
  • Manage the processes of checking in, checking out, and shelving materials in a dynamic environment
  • Utilize automated circulation systems to facilitate material circulation, including managing holds, issuing library cards, and resolving fines
  • Oversee the processing of book donations
  • Handle overdue materials retrieval and serve as the primary contact for customer inquiries
  • Assist in departmental operations, including opening and closing the Circulation Desk
  • Promote the Library and issue cards at outreach events
  • Interpret and ensure adherence to Library policies and procedures, communicating relevant information to staff and patrons
  • Address circulation-related queries and resolve issues from staff and Library users
  • Gather and relay information from staff to supervisors and other relevant personnel
  • Manage operations in the absence of the supervisor
  • Contribute to the planning, execution, and assessment of Circulation Services
  • Perform basic troubleshooting and maintenance of circulation equipment
  • Conduct audits of shelves for proper organization and display
  • Respond to Library emails
  • Maintain partnerships with external services as assigned
  • Assist Library patrons with equipment usage
  • Provide general information about Library services, directing patrons to appropriate staff as needed
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent required. A minimum of three (3) years of library experience is preferred, or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the necessary knowledge and skills to perform the essential functions of the position.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Work primarily conducted in a library setting, with some community engagement.
  • Must be able to lift and move materials, including book carts and bins, weighing up to 35 pounds.
  • Physical demands include standing, walking, reaching, bending, and stretching for extended periods.
  • Operation of standard office equipment requiring repetitive arm, hand, and eye movement.
