Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated School Nurse to join our team at East Central ISD. The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing a comprehensive program of health services for the campus, providing health services to students, and promoting health education and preventive health practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct care to students utilizing professional assessment skills, the nursing process, individualized health care plans, and established school health protocols.
  • Serve as a health advocate for students, notifying parents of accidents or illnesses and securing medical care as needed.
  • Coordinate the administration of medications to students at school, adhering to district policy and procedures.
  • Compile and maintain accurate and up-to-date health records on all students, including clinic records and physical and computerized reports.
  • Develop and implement effective procedures for mandatory screening programs, making referrals as necessary.
  • Participate in the development of campus health education curriculum and provide health education to individuals and groups.
  • Develop and recommend campus policies and procedures to promote the health and wellness of students and staff.
  • Provide health counseling and instruction to individual students, serving as a liaison between school personnel, families, healthcare professionals, and the community.
  • Assess student problems and make appropriate referrals, working with students, teachers, parents, and medical and health care professionals as needed.
  • Participate in Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee, crisis team, and school committees, developing Individual Health Plans.
  • Collaborate with other professionals regarding the implementation of health-related Individual Education Plan (IEP) items.
  • Participate in the assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse.
  • Make home visits to assist with student health problems as necessary, with the permission of the principal.
  • Collaborate regularly with the principal, health services coordinator, parents, food services, and other staff to ensure a healthy school environment.
  • Review and evaluate immunization records.
  • Supervise and train nurse aides, district personnel, and LVNs in-clinic procedures and responsibilities, adhering to district policy.
  • Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in the health services area.
  • Provide required annual training to campus staff on topics such as bloodborne pathogens, AED, anaphylaxis, and other health-related issues.
  • Report potential health and safety hazards to the principal.
  • Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  • Maintain certification in CPR, vision and hearing screening, and as a health screener.
  • Model behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program.
  • Valid registered nurse license to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nurse Examiners.
  • Certified by the Texas Department of Health to conduct vision and hearing screening.
  • CPR Certification and AED certificates.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Two years of nursing experience, preferably in community health.
  • Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health defects.
  • Ability to implement policies and procedures.
Working Conditions

The School Nurse will work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions, requiring emotional control under stress. The position involves frequent standing, sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing, pulling, and twisting. The School Nurse may be required to lift and carry students with physical disabilities, and may be exposed to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases.
