Position Title: Head Coach for Girls Soccer

Department: Athletics

Location: Making Waves Academy Richmond

Reports To: Athletic Director

Position Summary

The Head Coach for Girls Soccer at Making Waves Academy is tasked with creating an inclusive and educational athletic program that enhances students' skills while fostering character development and a positive team culture. The focus is not solely on competition but also on ensuring that every player feels valued and enjoys their participation.

Key Responsibilities

Team Management

  • Practice Sessions: Organize, plan, and conduct practice sessions, ensuring clear communication of schedules and expectations to players and parents.
  • Game Day Coaching: Lead the team during games, modeling appropriate behavior and sportsmanship for players and spectators alike.

Logistical Coordination

  • Equipment Management: Oversee the distribution and collection of uniforms and sports equipment, ensuring all items are returned post-season.
  • Transportation Coordination: Collaborate with the Athletic Director and Parent Representative to arrange transportation for the team.
  • Scheduling: Work with the Athletic Director to develop a comprehensive game schedule that accommodates both league and non-league matches.

Team Culture Development

  • Foster a supportive environment that prioritizes skill enhancement and personal growth for all team members.
  • Encourage players to recognize how the skills they develop will benefit them beyond athletics.
  • Actively demonstrate essential soccer skills during practices, engaging with players to enhance their learning experience.

Supervision and Safety

  • Ensure player conduct is appropriate during travel to and from games.
  • Remain present after practices and games until all players have been safely picked up.
  • Collaborate with the Athletic Trainer to address player injuries and promote safety.

Additional Expectations

Mission Alignment:

  • Exhibit a strong understanding of and commitment to the mission and values of Making Waves Academy.
  • Develop a Team Mission Statement and a Coaches' Purpose Statement to guide the program and its activities.
  • Support other athletic programs within the department, recognizing the shared resources and athletes.

Other Duties:

  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Athletic Director.

Work Environment:

This seasonal role involves various settings, including sports fields and gymnasiums, both on and off-campus.

Physical Requirements:

While fulfilling the duties of this position, the coach may need to walk, bend, or stand for extended periods.

Travel Requirements:

Some travel may be necessary for events such as workshops or competitions, including driving a school vehicle.

Qualifications:

Experience:

  • Prior coaching experience at the club or school level is highly desirable.
  • Experience in playing soccer at various competitive levels.
  • Experience in coaching youth.
  • Familiarity with restorative justice principles.
  • Understanding of relevant educational codes regarding student conduct.

Skills:

  • Strong communication skills with students, families, and staff.
  • Ability to adapt to school initiatives and maintain organization.
  • Capability to build relationships within a diverse community.
  • Professional demeanor in all interactions.

Education:

  • Knowledge of soccer and the ability to teach the sport effectively.
  • A college degree is preferred.
  • Valid CPR and First Aid certification required.
  • CTC Fingerprint/Certificate of Clearance (COC) is mandatory.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Spanish is advantageous.
