Virginia, Minnesota, United States Northrop Grumman Full time

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) invites you to become a part of our team within Marine Logistics Support (MLS) as a Marine Systems Field Engineer.

The responsibilities of the Marine Systems Field Engineer encompass overseeing the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of mechanical components of Northrop Grumman Marine Systems machinery aboard naval vessels, adhering to established Northrop Grumman standards and procedures.

This role requires travel and may be based in various locations across the continental United States.

Field assignments will take place at customer sites, including but not limited to significant naval locations.

Key Responsibilities:

The Marine Systems Field Engineer will be responsible for project planning and execution, engaging with customers, providing technical guidance to shipyard personnel or Northrop Grumman staff, preparing technical documentation, managing expenses, and initiating design modifications as required. This position demands a high level of independence while traveling and working.

Additional responsibilities include:

- Overseeing field assignments and managing all aspects of the work, including leading factory personnel, customer labor, subcontractors, and ship's crew.

- Operating autonomously at customer facilities, with remote support as necessary.
- Defining requirements and determining the approach to repairs or resolutions using Northrop Grumman documentation and processes.

Each task will have a unique repair strategy based on the specific issues encountered, which will be communicated to both customers and management.

- Writing technical condition reports that document essential data and measurements as interim or final updates for managed projects. - Communicating project progress to MLS management and clients.

- Providing technical assistance to customers and guidance to on-site labor during the installation, modification, troubleshooting, repair, and testing of marine propulsion and power generation systems.

- Compiling a list of recommended replacement materials to facilitate repairs and troubleshooting efforts.
- Offering engineering support during repair processes.
- Identifying the root cause of issues.
- Supervising disassembly and inspection activities.
- Designing custom tools, jigs, or equipment as necessary.
- Developing a disassembly and inspection strategy by applying engineering principles and concepts.

- Analyzing machinery/system issues through customer discussions, observing operations, defining troubleshooting strategies, and reviewing control system data.

Field Engineers are accountable for monitoring contract financials, scope adherence, and any deviations, which may lead to Requests for Equitable Adjustment (REA) to the contract.

Work will primarily occur at customer sites, typically on Navy surface ships and submarines.

The work environment is not a conventional office; it involves heavy manufacturing or operational settings, requiring physical agility to navigate confined spaces and climb equipment for inspections.

Field Engineers will be active throughout the day, often climbing and maneuvering over machinery for thorough assessments.

Basic Qualifications:

A Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or a related field with no prior experience required in shipboard marine machinery or similar systems.

- Proficiency in reading engineering drawings and schematics.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Strong customer service orientation with a positive demeanor.

- Capability to perform work onboard a vessel, which may involve climbing steep stairways and vertical ladders, and working extended hours.

- Willingness to frequently work extended shifts (often 12-hour days, 7 days a week).
- U.S. Citizenship.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Practical experience and theoretical understanding of steam-driven shipboard propulsion and power generation systems and their associated subsystems.
- Familiarity with machine shop operations, various hand tools, measuring devices, and shipyard experience.

Candidate Location:
Proximity to customer sites is advantageous.
Active Secret Clearance is preferred.

Compensation:
The salary range is competitive and reflects a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers various factors when determining base salary offers, including the role's scope and responsibilities, as well as the candidate's experience, education, skills, and current market conditions. Employees may qualify for discretionary bonuses in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions and allow employees to share in company success. Employees in higher-level positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.

Northrop Grumman offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, life and disability coverage, savings plans, paid holidays, and paid time off (PTO) for personal or vacation purposes.
