Position Overview:

We are seeking a Lead Research Engineer to serve as the Principal Investigator for a Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Phase I project. This initiative focuses on pioneering the use of advanced manufacturing techniques to create a Common Launch Container that adheres to military specifications for storage, transportation, and munitions launch.

The successful candidate will:

  • Oversee a skilled team of pneumatic system designers and engineers in conducting a comprehensive feasibility study.
  • Provide strategic direction and project management oversight to ensure adherence to timelines and budgetary limits.
  • Facilitate the research, design, and validation of an energetic launch system, taking into account existing specifications and constraints.

Qualifications:

Licenses or Certifications: Preferred qualifications include a Professional Engineer (PE) License, Six Sigma, or PMP certification.

Education: A Master’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited institution with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or a Bachelor’s degree in a related engineering discipline (Aerospace, Mechanical, etc.) with at least 15 years of experience.

Experience:

  • A minimum of ten years of experience in the design of pressurized systems.
  • Familiarity with energetics, pneumatic systems, and mechanisms.
  • Experience with Air Force Special Operations and the deployment of non-traditional munitions is highly desirable.
  • A proven history of leading technical teams and managing intricate projects.
  • Strong technical knowledge in advanced manufacturing methods, aerospace design, and military specifications.
  • Experience with government-funded research programs, particularly SBIR.
  • Proficiency in CAD/CAM software and other engineering tools.

The Lead Research Engineer will provide scientific and technical guidance to the project team. As the lead for the feasibility study, you will ensure that the team evaluates overall system design options with respect to key system attributes.

Skills and Abilities: The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication and collaboration skills to effectively address complex challenges. A proactive approach and a passion for solving intricate technical problems are essential. You will collaborate with engineering staff to achieve design, testing, and experimentation goals.

Additionally, the ability to assess innovative designs from a Systems Engineering perspective is crucial. This role requires a robust combination of technical expertise, project management capabilities, and the ability to meet both schedule and budgetary requirements.
