Position Overview

The Building Automation Engineer plays a pivotal role in executing and overseeing Chinook's implementation projects, which vary in scale and complexity, with an emphasis on automation and mechanical systems. This position will report to a Program Manager or Business Team leader for project delivery and will also support business development initiatives, including the creation of fee proposals. As a client-facing role, it necessitates substantial interaction with clients and the coordination of both internal and external resources to meet project goals, timelines, and financial targets. The role involves directing field personnel, subcontractors, and other technical support staff as necessary. Areas of expertise may include BAS Design, Design-Build, Renovation, Retro-fit, and modifications of building BAS, HVAC, SCADA, Electrical, and Energy Management Systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, review, estimate, and procure BAS and Automation systems and their components, integrating them into Energy Solution projects or deploying them independently.
  • Negotiate with project managers for necessary technical resources from within the organization when required.
  • Develop and implement risk identification and management strategies tailored to the project's complexity.
  • Ensure BAS systems adhere to client design specifications.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with project stakeholders, including Building Owners, Contractors, Architects, Engineers, and management.
  • Apply Chinook Systems engineering standards alongside industry benchmarks, such as ASHRAE, ASME, NFPA, and BCxA, to guarantee compliance and quality in project delivery.
  • Establish and continuously manage project expectations with team members and stakeholders.
  • Utilize open BAS protocols and communication methods—BACnet, LON, MODBUS, Ethernet, Web-Services, HTML, among others—to fulfill client BAS requirements.
  • Plan, schedule, and monitor project timelines and milestones using appropriate project management tools.
  • Prepare and present progress reports, proposals, requirements documentation, and presentations.
  • Review and prepare BAS Automation designs, drawings, bills of materials, diagrams, and graphics.
  • Proactively manage changes in project scope, identify potential issues, and develop contingency plans.
  • Foster and cultivate business relationships essential for the team's success, including with suppliers, subcontractors, and partners.
  • Program control systems based on the Sequence of Operation.

Required Skills

  • Dependable and punctual, with the ability to work independently while maintaining workflow.
  • Strong prioritization skills and sound judgment.
  • Effective interaction skills across all organizational levels.
  • Excellent communication abilities with high-profile clients.
  • Experience or training in Microsoft Networks, HTML, Ethernet/IP, and cybersecurity.
  • Demonstrated expertise in HVAC Control, BAS, Energy Management systems, and associated software.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Applications and project management software (e.g., MS Project) and risk management tools.
  • Familiarity with MS Visio is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Strong programming, graphics, and integration capabilities.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and at least 7 years of continuous experience in managing Building Automation projects.
  • Niagara Certification is preferred.
