Position Overview
Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Lead Process Engineer specializing in Water and Wastewater for our expanding Global Water Practice. The Lead Process Engineer will collaborate with project teams to develop innovative designs for new initiatives, modifications, and redevelopment projects. This role will involve working closely with the project team throughout the design and construction phases, making necessary adjustments to process plans based on budgetary limits, design considerations, or client requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the design and implementation of water and wastewater treatment projects.
- Opportunity to become a subject matter expert in Regional Treatment Plant operations.
- Conduct daily technical process work, including project planning and management of scope, schedule, and budget.
- Establish critical project objectives and performance metrics, engaging with clients on technical issues as necessary.
- Assist in client development, technical sales, proposal writing, and presentations; liaise with regulatory bodies.
- Foster career advancement opportunities within our rapidly growing Regional and National Water Practice.
- Organize and communicate project technical requirements to department leadership, mentoring junior staff.
- Provide support for design-build project deliveries in collaboration with the Burns & McDonnell Construction/Design-Build team.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Civil, or Environmental Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited institution. A Master’s degree is preferred.
- Alternatively, a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology and successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
- At least 7 years of experience in process engineering, with a preference for EPC project experience and a background in municipal water or wastewater treatment facilities.
- Professional Engineering License (PE) is preferred or the ability to obtain it within six months.
- A self-motivated individual with a background in water or wastewater processes and plant facilities, eager to embrace new challenges.
- For candidates with a water-focused background, experience in both conventional and membrane filtration is preferred, along with knowledge in hydraulics, chemical feed systems, and advanced oxidation.
- For candidates with a wastewater-focused background, experience in preliminary and biological treatment processes, disinfection, and solids handling is preferred.
- Strong ability to interact effectively with various stakeholders, including industry, government, and public contracts.
- Existing relationships with local and statewide clients are advantageous.
- In-depth knowledge of standard engineering practices and process design codes (ASME, ANSI, API, PIP, NACE).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and process simulation software (e.g., Hysys, Aspen, HTRI).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven experience in leading design efforts for large projects and delegating tasks to team members.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with a methodical approach to problem-solving.
- Exceptional attention to detail, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to conduct quality reviews of engineering documents and specifications.
- Willingness to travel as required.
Compensation and Benefits:
The compensation range for this position is competitive and reflects the skills and experience of the candidate. The total annual compensation package includes a base salary and eligibility for a discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
