Position Summary:

The Medical Billing Specialist - Hard Collections plays a crucial role in overseeing the collection of overdue accounts. This position demands exceptional communication abilities, a thorough understanding of medical billing and coding standards, and the capacity to manage sensitive patient information with the utmost confidentiality. The specialist will liaise with patients, insurance providers, and internal teams to resolve outstanding payments effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Proactively engage with patients and insurance companies through various communication channels to recover overdue payments.
  • Oversee accounts receivable, ensuring prompt follow-up on delinquent accounts.
  • Facilitate payment arrangements with patients, balancing the necessity for payment with their financial capabilities.
  • Investigate and rectify billing issues, disputes, and denials to expedite payment processes.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant federal and state regulations, including HIPAA and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA).
  • Maintain detailed records of all interactions and actions taken regarding each account.
  • Generate and present reports on collection efforts, outstanding balances, and other pertinent metrics.
  • Collaborate with the billing team and insurance companies to resolve billing concerns and optimize the collection workflow.
  • Provide patients with clear information regarding their account status, payment options, and other necessary details.
  • Adhere to the employee manual and maintain professionalism in all interactions.
  • Uphold strict confidentiality and comply with all HIPAA regulations.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; an Associate's degree in healthcare administration, finance, or a related field is preferred.
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of experience in medical billing and collections, specifically focusing on collections.

Skills and Experience:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of medical billing processes, insurance protocols, and coding (ICD-10, CPT).
  • Outstanding communication and negotiation skills.
  • Proficient in medical billing software and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple accounts efficiently and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Familiarity with applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Outlook, and basic office equipment operation.
  • Ability to interpret explanation of benefits (EOBs).
  • Exceptional phone etiquette and verbal communication skills.

Physical Requirements:

This role involves sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods. Some bending, lifting, and stretching may be necessary. Manual dexterity is required for telephone and computer use. The position demands the ability to work under pressure and involves regular contact with patients.
