Position Summary: The Medical Billing Specialist is responsible for accurately posting and processing charges, as well as managing accounts receivable associated with these charges. This role involves liaising with insurance companies regarding denials and underpayments, as well as generating monthly accounts receivable reports for management review.

Key Responsibilities: (This list may not encompass all assigned duties)

  • Import charge batches from the Electronic Health Record (EHR) to the Practice Management (PM) system, ensuring accuracy during daily imports.
  • Verify each batch against appointment records to ensure all charges are captured, and reconcile payments received at the front desk.
  • Conduct necessary follow-ups for each charge batch, including faxing medication invoices to Medicare and other insurers, and identifying medical records for transmission.
  • Regularly monitor and report undictated encounters to physicians and management.
  • Input laboratory charges and maintain a spreadsheet for external laboratory charges.
  • Adhere to clinic guidelines for timely charge entry.
  • Assist in correcting vouchers as requested.
  • Engage in professional development to stay current with healthcare practices related to coding, fee schedules, and insurance plan changes.
  • Process upfront credit card payments.
  • Address inquiries from patients and front office staff.
  • Manage LMC charges on a rotating basis.
  • Review assigned explanations of benefits (EOBs) to identify denied or underpaid claims.
  • Support payment-related projects as needed.
  • Complete daily correspondence and monthly accounts receivable reports as required by Billing Managers.
  • Contact insurance companies to investigate claims, dispute denials or underpayments, submit appeals, and secure payments.
  • Respond to questions from patients, clerical staff, and insurance representatives.
  • Prepare accounts for submission to external collections as necessary.
  • Perform various collection actions, including contacting patients, correcting, and resubmitting claims.
  • Participate in educational activities and attend monthly staff meetings.
  • Conduct oneself in accordance with the employee manual of Las Vegas Urology LLP.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to all HIPAA regulations.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 1-3 years of experience in medical billing or the healthcare industry.

Performance Expectations:

  • Proficient in medical billing, collections, and coding practices.
  • Familiarity with CPT and ICD-10 codes.
  • Knowledgeable in Microsoft Office, Outlook, and capable of operating basic office equipment.
  • Able to read and understand explanations of benefits (EOBs), post payments, and perform various billing functions.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, demonstrating tact and diplomacy.
  • Excellent phone etiquette and communication skills.

Physical Requirements: This position is office-based, requiring prolonged periods of sitting. Some bending, lifting, and stretching may be necessary. The role involves working under stress and requires effective use of a telephone. Manual dexterity is essential for operating a calculator and computer keyboard. Regular communication is required, and the ability to work in stressful situations is necessary.
