Hospice Care Aide

Position Overview:
The Hospice Aide, also known as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), plays a vital role within the interdisciplinary team, working under the guidance of a registered nurse to provide essential services tailored to meet the personal needs of patients and enhance their comfort.
Key Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of the Hospice Aide encompass, but are not limited to, the following:
- Delivering personal care services based on assigned patient needs and responding promptly to requests.
- Ensuring patient safety and utilizing equipment correctly (e.g., foot stools, side rails, oxygen).
- Administering personal care tasks such as bathing, back rubs, oral hygiene, and changing bed linens as required.
- Assisting patients with dressing and undressing as needed.
- Planning and preparing nutritious meals, including grocery shopping when necessary.
- Providing assistance with feeding patients as assigned.
- Measuring and documenting vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure as directed.
- Monitoring and caring for the patient's skin to prevent tissue breakdown.
- Reporting significant changes in the patient's condition to the Case Manager, while being mindful of the family dynamics and interpersonal relationships.
- Supporting patient mobility and exercise as instructed by the hospice nurse or therapist.
- Offering assistance with bedpans and urinals, as well as light laundry tasks.
- Conducting range of motion exercises and other simple procedures as part of therapy services as ordered.
- Providing respite care for patients and their families when on-site.
- Maintaining a clean and organized living environment for the patient.
- Adhering to documentation and care standards set by the organization.
- Participating in quality assessment and performance improvement initiatives.
- Respecting the personal needs and environment of the patient and their family.
Qualifications:
To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Completion of a state-approved training program and competency evaluation.
- Minimum age of 18 years.
- Ability to read, comprehend, and follow written instructions, as well as document care provided.
- Understanding of hospice philosophy and comfort in providing care to terminally ill patients.
- Positive references from previous employers.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
- Empathy for the needs of the ill, injured, and frail.
- Current CPR certification.
- Exemplary personal hygiene and good communication skills.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
The Hospice Aide will not engage in activities classified as nursing practices according to the Nurse Practice Act, such as administering medications or performing sterile procedures.
