Overview of Position

Under the guidance of the Child Nutrition Services Director or designated representative, this role is accountable for the overall management of the school kitchen. This includes overseeing staff in the preparation of high-quality, nutritious meals that comply with District standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and engage in the preparation and serving of nutritious, cost-effective meals and ala carte options in accordance with District guidelines.
  • Manage inventory by ordering and receiving food and supplies to ensure sufficient stock for production needs, adhering to Child Nutrition Services protocols.
  • Conduct inspections of food deliveries for weight, condition, and order accuracy, addressing any discrepancies or quality concerns with the Child Nutrition Services office.
  • Ensure all food is maintained at safe temperatures and under sanitary conditions, following Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point Standards.
  • Create and manage daily work schedules for staff to ensure timely completion of tasks.
  • Ensure compliance with Child Nutrition Services guidelines regarding the proper use and storage of food and supplies.
  • Maintain a comprehensive collection of standardized recipes and train staff on their application and adaptation.
  • Instruct staff on the proper use and maintenance of kitchen equipment, as well as safety protocols; monitor equipment usage and request repairs as necessary.
  • Calculate daily meal costs in accordance with Child Nutrition Services guidelines and make adjustments as needed.
  • Keep accurate records and prepare necessary reports, including cash counts, menu planners, payroll, and special programs, submitting them according to established timelines.
  • Promptly investigate and report any accidents to the Child Nutrition Services office.
  • Secure the kitchen and dining area at the end of each shift.
  • Foster and maintain positive working relationships with staff and students.
  • Supervise, direct, and train assigned staff in the skills required to fulfill their duties.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and recommend substitutes for assignments, ensuring evaluations are completed annually for all Child Nutrition Services staff at the assigned location.
  • Address suggestions, complaints, and requests from building staff and students.
  • Promote the Child Nutrition Services program to enhance meal participation.
  • Assist school staff in advocating for good nutrition.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Working Conditions:

Requires prolonged standing and walking; ability to lift up to 25 lbs; capable of carrying, pushing, stooping, reaching, and performing fine motor functions.

Must be adaptable to shifting tasks and priorities; experience frequent interruptions; requires flexibility and teamwork; ability to communicate effectively with students and adults in challenging situations.

Requires strong decision-making and problem-solving skills; must communicate with individuals in difficult circumstances; excellent listening skills are essential; must adapt to change and remain flexible.

Normal vision, depth perception, and color vision are required.

Exposure to general cleaning chemicals may occur.

Typical Qualifications

1. Must meet all minimum qualifications for Assistant, Satellite Lead, and Production Coordinator roles.

2. One year of experience in cooking, baking, and serving high-quality nutritious meals.

3. Ability to adhere to school District policies, procedures, and the requirements of the Child Nutrition Services programs.

4. Experience in maintaining accurate, detailed records and required reports; ability to meet established deadlines.
