Description

As a Junior Civil Engineering Specialist, you will engage in professional activities related to the planning, execution, oversight, and upkeep of various public infrastructure and utility systems. Your role will be guided by the Engineering Project Manager, with opportunities to lead temporary staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in and supervise the design processes for streets, utilities, stormwater management, and other municipal infrastructure.
  • Create comprehensive project documentation and plans for initiatives developed internally.
  • Address engineering inquiries and challenges posed by the community; provide essential information to regulatory bodies.
  • Offer engineering insights and solutions to colleagues and elected representatives.
  • Manage budgets for special projects effectively.
  • Oversee the City’s stormwater management program and prepare annual reports.
  • Conduct inspections of construction activities carried out by external contractors; serve as project manager for various assignments.
  • Administer and/or oversee the management of contracts for municipal projects.
  • Utilize AutoCAD to produce engineering and architectural designs.
  • Develop and assess engineering compliance reports.
  • Perform additional related duties as necessary.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related discipline, with some experience in engineering roles, or a comparable combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of or eligibility for Engineer-In-Training certification.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
  • Fundamental understanding of civil engineering principles and practices relevant to project planning and specifications.
  • Familiarity with contemporary methods and techniques in public works and utility project design.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations and provide recommendations on engineering issues and planning.
  • Competence in using civil engineering tools and equipment.
  • Proficiency in computer-aided design software applications.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to prepare and analyze complex cost reports.
  • Capability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with municipal officials, colleagues, contractors, and the public.
Physical Requirements

This position may require occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds. The role involves frequent sitting, speaking, and listening, as well as using hands for various tasks. Occasional standing, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling may be necessary. Visual inspection and the use of measuring devices are part of the job, along with operating machinery and vehicles. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions may occur, and the work environment is typically quiet, such as in a park or storage area.
