The Texas Water Foundation (TWF) is a statewide, nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to guiding Texas towards a sustainable water future. Since its inception in 1998, TWF has aimed to elevate public consciousness regarding the critical importance of water in our everyday lives. Currently, the Foundation's focus encompasses water policy, workforce development, leadership initiatives, and a comprehensive statewide water campaign.

ROLE OVERVIEW

The Opportunity: The Head of Communication Strategies will play a pivotal role in shaping TWF's narrative during a transformative phase for the organization. As part of the leadership team, this individual will spearhead TWF's storytelling approach, ensuring a cohesive dialogue surrounding water and water policy in Texas.

Ideal Candidate: We seek an innovative leader with a proven track record in crafting, executing, and refining impactful communication strategies, ideally within the nonprofit or policy sectors. The perfect candidate will merge strategic foresight with the agility to adapt swiftly in a dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Formulate and oversee TWF's external communication strategy across various multimedia platforms (social media, email, website, blog) to showcase TWF's impact, thereby enhancing fundraising and program outreach. This includes drafting and refining policy briefs, marketing emails, website content, blog entries, and other communication materials.
  • Collaborate with policy experts to devise and implement communication strategies driven by policy initiatives. Create public-facing marketing materials, educational resources, and press materials.
  • Engage with program staff to collect stories, data, and testimonials, establishing a systematic approach to data management.
  • Partner with design professionals to lead the vision and strategy for rebranding efforts.
  • Ensure all communication materials align with brand guidelines and effectively convey TWF's values and messaging.
  • Generate content and enhance audience engagement across TWF's social media platforms.
  • Manage and curate content for the TWF website, ensuring it remains consistent, engaging, and user-friendly.
  • Assess and evaluate the success of communication initiatives, adjusting strategies as necessary to meet desired outcomes. Provide regular reports on campaign performance and results.
  • Develop and maintain the organization's communications calendar, ensuring timely dissemination of publications and promotion of events.
  • Oversee the budget for the Communications department.
  • Collaborate on communications focused on development initiatives.
  • Work with development teams to envision and create an impact dashboard.
  • Manage media relations strategies, including media outreach, drafting press releases, op-eds, and editorials, maintaining media contacts, and tracking coverage.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Water Policy to formulate strategic communications regarding policy matters.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, public affairs, English, or a related field is preferred.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in a communications role, ideally within the nonprofit or policy sector.
  • Ability to plan proactively while also responding effectively to evolving circumstances.
  • Proven ability to write clearly and succinctly on complex topics for various audiences.
  • Capability to operate at both strategic and tactical levels.
  • A keen eye for design.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship management skills.
  • Demonstrated success in managing and prioritizing multiple complex projects.
  • A desire to contribute to an evolving organization and enhance its reputation.
  • A strong commitment to a collaborative, team-oriented culture.

  • Experience with graphic design software is a plus.

Compensation & Benefits

The salary range for this position is competitive. Texas Water Foundation offers opportunities for professional growth along with a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement contributions, and paid time off, including parental leave. TWF currently operates in a hybrid work environment.
