Position Overview

The California Emergency Response Corps (CERC) is a comprehensive statewide initiative aimed at equipping Californians with the skills necessary for effective disaster preparedness and response. This program is integral to the broader California Volunteers campaign, which focuses on improving emergency readiness in communities facing social isolation, economic hardship, language barriers, and food insecurity.

This position is an 11-month AmeriCorps role, serving at CERC's Regional Partner, Binational of Central California, based in Sacramento.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Commit to 40 hours of service each week throughout the contract period.
  • Participate in mandatory training sessions, either in-person or virtually, as required.
  • Be prepared to assist in statewide emergency operations for two weeks as needed.
  • Provide ongoing support to nonprofit partner organizations, aligning with their missions and internal programs.
  • Engage in regular performance evaluations with CERC staff.
  • Maintain weekly communication, documentation, and timekeeping of service hours and activities.
  • Deliver community services focused on Disaster Preparedness Education and alleviating food insecurity at local food banks or distribution sites.
  • Be willing to train as a local emergency responder in collaboration with the American Red Cross.
  • Participate in all required State/National Service Days.

Community Engagement:

  • Enhance partnerships with local community organizations and internal programs.
  • Represent the partner site and AmeriCorps programs at events and training sessions.
  • Conduct surveys and other measurable activities to assess community needs.

Educational Outreach:

Members will lead initiatives and outreach efforts through canvassing and partnerships with local nonprofits, aiming for measurable improvements in community preparedness.

Disaster Assistance:

As necessary, members will respond to disasters, providing essential support to organizations managing the response efforts. Deployments may occur on short notice and can last up to two weeks. Following each deployment, members and staff will conduct debriefing sessions to discuss lessons learned and enhance future response strategies.

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency is required.
  • Local residency is necessary for daily service.
  • Two years of professional or volunteer experience in related fields, or a Bachelor's Degree.
  • Flexibility to serve evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to deploy on short notice anywhere in California for disaster response for up to two weeks.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Suite, Zoom, G Suite, and a willingness to learn new technologies.
  • Service in this role is contingent upon background checks and COVID-19 health requirements.
  • A personal vehicle, valid California driver's license, and automobile insurance are mandatory.
