Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to deliver design and systems engineering expertise for cutting-edge micro reactors within the Reactor Project Engineering Department. Our team operates on a 4x10 schedule at our advanced facilities.

INL stands as the premier national laboratory for DOE-NE, spearheading significant nuclear research, development, and demonstration efforts essential for advancing nuclear innovation towards practical application. The Materials and Fuels Complex collaborates closely with the National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) to facilitate the deployment of advanced micro reactors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize engineering expertise to oversee the development of advanced micro reactor systems, requiring proficiency in designing various equipment, including reactor instrumentation, controls, MCCs, motors, and variable frequency drives.
  • Guide junior engineers and assist the department manager in delegating tasks within the team.
  • Apply comprehensive knowledge of electrical engineering principles across diverse assignments related to nuclear reactors, including the design of electrical systems and equipment, project development, and engineering support during project execution.
  • Serve in a Systems Engineering capacity for reactor designs executed by design agents, and for modifications to existing electrical systems, as well as the development of new capabilities as directed by management.
  • Provide support for the installation and commissioning of assigned reactor systems.
  • Manage configuration of assigned reactor systems.
  • Collaborate with reactor design agents throughout the lifecycle of reactor projects.
  • Monitor system performance and conduct failure analysis.
  • Support operational activities.
  • Leverage experience in the design and installation of electrical and instrumentation systems for nuclear reactors.
  • Understand and apply relevant codes and standards, including NEC and IEEE standards for nuclear applications.
  • Utilize experience in managing engineering documentation and drawings.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues at all organizational levels.
  • Analyze complex engineering solutions.
  • Employ knowledge of variable frequency drives and communication systems.
  • Apply foundational knowledge of building management systems and HVAC control instrumentation.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering with 5-8 years of relevant experience, or a Master's Degree with 3-6 years, or a PhD with 2-4 years of experience.
  • This role requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, necessitating U.S. Citizenship.
Compensation Information:
  • The salary range for this position is: Level 3 ($91,588) / Level 4 ($109,908). Compensation decisions at Idaho National Laboratory are based on factors such as education, relevant experience, and other qualifications.

  • This position is designated for testing; candidates will be required to undergo a pre-employment drug screening and periodic testing during employment.
