Role Summary
The We Are Sharing Hope SC Transplant Recovery Surgeon is tasked with the critical responsibility of recovering abdominal organs for transplantation, research, and therapeutic purposes. This role involves overseeing the surgical recovery process, ensuring that the organs are handled with the utmost respect and in accordance with the principles of organ donation. The Transplant Recovery Surgeon is committed to upholding the highest standards of recovery and collaborates with various transplant centers to ensure compliance with established recovery protocols. Additionally, this position plays a key role in developing surgical recovery policies and training surgical support personnel. The Surgeon is also responsible for adhering to the standards set by the American Society of Transplantation (AST) Code of Conduct.

Key Responsibilities
- Act as the primary surgeon for the procurement of abdominal organs.
- Ensure the quality and integrity of organ recovery for transplantation, research, and therapy.
- Respond swiftly to scheduled donor recovery operations.
- Manage the surgical recovery process, including communication with external teams and resolving intraoperative challenges.
- Serve as a medical resource for intraoperative observations of organs and relay findings to transplant centers for suitability assessments.
- Guarantee that all viable organs are made available for transplantation, including managing intraoperative delays if necessary.
- Evaluate surgical errors and provide recommendations for process enhancements.
- Engage in organ perfusion practices, ensuring organs are maintained to the highest standards prior to transplantation.
- Participate in the SHSC Medical Advisory Committee to refine best practices.
- Collaborate with clinical leadership to develop and enhance the skills of clinical staff in organ recovery.
- Contribute to clinical case review conferences to educate staff on organ donor management and recovery processes.
- Work with executive leadership to establish and achieve performance objectives.
- Present reports during Organ Recovery Staff meetings.
- Actively engage in quality improvement initiatives within SHSC and with local transplant programs.
- Maintain credentials for inclusion in the ACIN Database.
- Provide clinical and surgical training to SHSC and hospital staff as needed.
- Represent SHSC at various local, regional, and national forums.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) degree with eligibility for licensure in South Carolina.
Board certification or eligibility in surgery.
Completion of an ASTS-approved transplant surgery fellowship is preferred.
A minimum of two years of experience with an organ procurement organization is required.
Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver's license.
Strong decision-making skills along with excellent interpersonal and communication abilities.
