Position Summary
The We Are Sharing Hope SC organization is seeking a dedicated Transplant Recovery Surgeon responsible for the procurement of abdominal organs for transplantation, research, and therapeutic purposes. This role involves overseeing the surgical recovery process, ensuring that organ retrieval is conducted with the utmost respect and in alignment with the principles of donation. The surgeon will uphold the highest standards of recovery and collaborate with various transplant centers to ensure compliance with established protocols. Additionally, the surgeon will contribute to the formulation of recovery policies and support staff training initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the lead surgeon for the procurement of abdominal organs.
- Ensure the quality and integrity of organ recovery for transplantation and research.
- Respond swiftly to scheduled donor recovery operations.
- Manage the surgical recovery process, including communication with external teams and resolving any intraoperative challenges.
- Serve as a medical resource regarding organ observations during surgery and relay findings to transplant centers for suitability assessments.
- Guarantee the availability of all viable organs for transplantation, including managing intraoperative delays if necessary.
- Evaluate surgical practices and recommend improvements.
- Engage in organ perfusion activities, ensuring optimal maintenance of organs prior to transplantation.
- Participate in the Medical Advisory Committee to enhance best practices.
- Support clinical leadership in the development and training of recovery staff.
- Contribute to clinical case review meetings to educate and provide feedback on organ donor management and recovery processes.
- Collaborate with executive leadership to set and achieve performance objectives.
- Present findings during Organ Recovery Staff meetings.
- Engage in quality improvement initiatives both within the organization and with local transplant programs.
- Maintain necessary credentials for database inclusion.
- Provide clinical and surgical training to staff as needed.
- Represent the organization at various meetings and conferences.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Medical Doctor (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) degree with eligibility for licensure in South Carolina.
Board certification or eligibility in surgery.
Completion of an ASTS accredited transplant surgery fellowship is preferred.
A minimum of two years of experience with an organ procurement organization is required.
Possession of a valid South Carolina driver's license is necessary.
Strong decision-making skills and excellent interpersonal communication abilities are essential.
