Key Responsibilities

The Operations Supervisor is tasked with overseeing and delivering training for ILA rail, vessel, and yard teams, as well as stevedoring, with the aim of ensuring a secure work environment, optimizing marine, yard, and gate productivity, managing costs, and fulfilling terminal and operational standards. You will assist in enforcing the security protocols to guarantee compliance with Federal Regulations CFR 105. Your continuous efforts to enhance service quality for all clients and to provide a safe working environment for all employees are essential.
  • Ensure all daily work assignments are executed correctly and safely by the Foremen/Chief Supervisors and the hourly union workforce under your supervision.
  • Guide the Foreman/Chief Supervisors in their daily tasks to minimize labor costs and maximize terminal efficiency.
  • Assess and order necessary labor, including additional personnel as needed based on business demands.
  • Empowered to recruit and schedule competent labor while directing the workforce in their daily assignments.
  • Monitor labor arrival times, authorize necessary overtime, and ensure accurate payroll records reflecting actual hours worked.
  • Determine required terminal equipment and collaborate with other Managers to optimize terminal yard space, secure necessary chassis, and enhance vessel productivity.
  • Utilize independent judgment in making critical operational decisions, such as reallocating resources between tasks to improve overall terminal operations.
  • Develop and implement operational plans across the terminal facility.
  • Exercise authority in managing the labor you supervise, including the ability to issue warnings, citations, or terminations as necessary.
  • Direct I.L.A. Foremen/Chief Supervisors to take appropriate actions for efficient and safe terminal operations.
  • Handle grievances promptly and utilize independent judgment to resolve issues effectively.
Ideal Candidate Profile
Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma/GED; a college degree is preferred.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Familiarity with mobile devices and applications.
  • Willingness to work nights, holidays, and weekends as required.
  • Ability to endure extended shift hours based on operational needs.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one, along with the capacity to secure insurance as per company policies.
  • Physical capability to stand and sit for extended periods.
  • Experience with continuous improvement initiatives to enhance APM Terminals' value.

  • 2+ years of supervisory or management experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in transportation, supply chain, warehouse, stevedoring, or equivalent military experience.
