Key Responsibilities

The Operations Supervisor is accountable for overseeing and training ILA rail, vessel, and yard teams, as well as stevedoring, with the aim of ensuring a safe working environment, optimizing marine, yard, and gate productivity, managing costs, and fulfilling terminal and operational requirements. You will assist in enforcing the security plan to ensure compliance with Federal Regulations.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring all daily work assignments are executed correctly and safely by the Foremen/Chief Supervisors and hourly union labor under your supervision.
  • Guiding the Foremen/Chief Supervisors in their daily tasks to minimize labor costs and enhance terminal efficiency.
  • Determining and requesting appropriate labor, including additional resources as necessary based on business demands.
  • Hiring and scheduling qualified labor and directing the workforce in their daily tasks.
  • Monitoring labor arrival times, authorizing overtime when necessary, and ensuring accurate payroll records.
  • Assessing terminal equipment needs and collaborating with other managers to maximize terminal yard space and improve vessel productivity.
  • Utilizing independent judgment to make critical operational decisions aimed at enhancing overall terminal operations.
  • Developing and executing operational plans throughout the terminal facility.
  • Administering discipline to the labor you supervise, including Foremen/Chief Supervisors and hourly-paid union labor.
  • Addressing grievances promptly and using independent judgment to resolve issues effectively.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A high school diploma/GED; a college degree is preferred.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Basic proficiency with mobile devices and applications.
  • Flexibility to work nights, holidays, and weekends, with the potential for extended shifts based on business needs.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain insurance as per company policies.
  • The capability to stand and sit for extended periods.
  • Experience with continuous improvement projects or process enhancements.

Soft Skills

Strong candidates are self-starters with excellent multitasking and problem-solving skills, outstanding verbal and written communication abilities, and a collaborative team player attitude. They must adapt quickly to significant changes and work effectively across various functions.

Preferred Qualifications

While not mandatory, the following are advantageous:

  • 2+ years of supervisory or management experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in transportation, supply chain, warehouse, stevedoring, or equivalent military experience.
