Position Overview

This role entails serving as a municipal law enforcement officer within a comprehensive, community-focused police department. The selected candidate will engage in law enforcement and peacekeeping duties. The Frederick Police Department emphasizes strong community engagement, utilizing problem-solving techniques to address local concerns. Responsibilities include crime prevention, traffic law enforcement, protective patrol services, mediation in neighborhood and family disputes, apprehension and arrest of law violators, and recovery of stolen property. Comprehensive training is provided, with full compensation and benefits; standard training hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., with potential evening, weekend, and holiday scheduling as needed. Post-training, workdays will rotate based on a schedule of 11 1⁄2 hour shifts, with permanent shifts assigned, meaning no rotation between day and evening shifts. Regular schedules may include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Base salary of $58,810 for entry-level officers.

Key Responsibilities

Essential Duties:

The following duties are essential for this position:
• Patrol designated areas of the city using various modes of transportation.
• Enforce local, state, and federal laws.
• Respond to emergency calls regarding life and property protection, traffic incidents, and other emergencies.
• Prepare detailed reports on arrests, activities, and unusual incidents.
• Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations of disturbances, criminal incidents, hazardous situations, vehicle accidents, and fatalities.
• Make arrests and conduct interrogations of suspects while interviewing victims, complainants, and witnesses.
• Coordinate and execute thorough investigations of violent crimes, child abuse, property crimes, vice, gaming, and narcotics violations.
• Testify and present evidence in court.
• Provide backup support for fellow officers and personnel.
• Collect, preserve, and maintain evidence and property.
• Assist motorists and enforce traffic safety laws through citations and warnings.
• Search, fingerprint, and transport detainees.
• Respond to demonstrations, riots, hostage situations, and other high-risk scenarios.
• Maintain public contact regarding potential law enforcement issues and foster positive community relations.
• Serve warrants and subpoenas.
• Monitor and manage routine and unusual traffic conditions.
• Conduct security checks of buildings.
• Administer first aid as necessary.

In addition to the essential duties, employees in this classification may perform various other duties, which may not be assigned to every position.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Must be a citizen or a permanent legal resident of the United States and an honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces, with a pending application for U.S. citizenship.
• Must be at least 21 years of age by the time of graduation from the Academy.
• Physical ability to pass agility components of the selection process.
• Successful completion of a written examination and oral interview.
• Meet medical, drug, and psychological screening requirements.
• Possess an excellent moral character and background suitable for a comprehensive background investigation and subsequent polygraph testing.

Required Certificates and Licenses:
• Valid Driver's License (at least equivalent to Maryland Class C).
• Ability to obtain certification as a police officer from the Maryland Police Training Commission.

• Ability to perform precise arm-hand movements and maintain static positions, such as when using a firearm.
• Direct traffic requiring continuous arm-hand movements.

  • Base salary of $56,079 for entry-level officers. Salary range for Lateral officers (MPTC Certified or Out of State Comparative Compliance) is $56,079 to $63,081, based on years of certification.
