BACKGROUND
The Battelle National Biodefense Institute (BNBI) operates the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center (NBACC), a premier facility focused on safeguarding the nation from biological threats. Our mission supports the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and enhances national biodefense preparedness through comprehensive response strategies, threat assessment, and bioforensic investigations.
Established in response to the biodefense needs identified after the Amerithrax incidents in 2001, NBACC has been pivotal in addressing critical gaps in our understanding of biological agents. Our team provides essential scientific insights to federal law enforcement, aiding in the investigation and attribution of biocrimes while ensuring the protection of the U.S. bioeconomy.
PRIMARY FUNCTION
The successful candidate will collaborate with a dedicated team of scientists at the National Bioforensic Analysis Center (NBFAC), working within Biosafety Levels 2, 3, and 4. Responsibilities include the development, evaluation, and optimization of immunoassays for the detection of toxins and microorganisms, as well as the isolation, identification, and characterization of viruses.
In addition, the role involves engaging in casework related to viral culture and toxin detection from forensic samples, adhering to ISO 17025 standards, and providing support to federal partners.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- A PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant scientific discipline or engineering, with a minimum of 2 years of applicable experience.
- Experience in immunoassay development, toxinology, and/or virology is essential.
- Strong oral and written communication skills are crucial.
- Proven organizational abilities with a history of effective teamwork and independent work.
- Familiarity with biocontainment protocols, laboratory safety, and biosurety practices is advantageous.
- Experience in supporting laboratory operations in compliance with management systems (e.g., ISO) is preferred.
- U.S. citizenship is required, along with the ability to obtain and maintain necessary security clearances.
- Participation in relevant health and safety programs is mandatory.
- Flexibility to engage in alternative work schedules as needed.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and refine methods for toxin and virus identification used in bioforensic analyses, including both traditional and flow cytometric immunoassays.
- Conduct laboratory work with biological agents in BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 environments, ensuring compliance with biosafety and quality assurance standards.
- Assist in the management of casework, utilizing ISO 17025-accredited methods to maintain laboratory readiness for viral culture and toxin detection.
- Review analytical plans and reports, providing expert opinions and interpretations of results while maintaining accurate records in a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and operational capabilities of laboratory spaces, including maintenance of select agent registrations and ISO accreditations.
- Participate in the training and implementation of the Quality Management System (QMS), ensuring proper quality control measures are in place.
- Contribute to project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation for Virology and Immunology initiatives.
- Exercise sound judgment in selecting methods and techniques for problem-solving within established practices.
- Mentor junior staff and technical personnel, guiding them in new assignments and methodologies.
- Engage in the evaluation of new technologies and protocols, contributing to the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to enhance operational efficiency.
- Identify and address deviations from the QMS, initiating corrective actions as necessary.
- Prepare and maintain documentation required for compliance with ISO 17025 standards.
- Ensure proper maintenance and usage of laboratory equipment, reagents, and supplies.
- Provide leadership and technical expertise to staff, prioritizing and scheduling work effectively.
