Job Description

Position Overview:

Serve as the Manufacturing Engineering lead for Surface Mount Technology (SMT), printed circuit board assembly, and Conformal Coating for both new and existing electronic products.

Responsibilities

Key Duties:

  • Assist in the development of a proficient Manufacturing Engineering team to support business objectives and processes.
  • Facilitate the execution of the manufacturing strategy and oversee its technical implementation as required. Provide insights to improve productivity, quality, and safety.
  • Transition critical issues such as quality, cycle time, cost efficiency, and continuous improvement into actionable Manufacturing Engineering goals.
  • Collaborate closely with Operations, Continuous Improvement, and Quality teams in preparation for daily production meetings.
  • Act as a mentor to junior staff on complex technical challenges. This role involves hands-on engineering to guide frontline process development and enhancements.
  • Define and lead projects aimed at identifying and implementing continuous yield and process improvements, resulting in cost-effective, high-quality, and efficient manufacturing capabilities.
  • Support the lead Manufacturing Engineering team in analyzing and addressing root causes of process challenges, developing and implementing sustainable solutions. Introduce new technologies and equipment for process optimization and cost reduction.
  • Oversee and guide the team in implementing and managing real-time Statistical Process Control (SPC) and utilizing Six Sigma methodologies to establish effective process controls.

Experience:

  • Proficient with printed circuit board assembly equipment, methods, and processes including stencil selection and printing, SMT component placement, reflow, wave and selective soldering, as well as manual and automated optical inspection, conformal coating, and curing.
  • Experience in the development of production equipment, tooling, and fixtures, including design, specification, and qualification.
  • Knowledge of Statistical Process Control and Lean Manufacturing principles.
  • Familiarity with inspection techniques and equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability in project management, facilitating teams, and negotiating effectively with key suppliers. Interface with external vendors to procure high-quality equipment and fixtures.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team to identify opportunities, recognize product and equipment weaknesses, and resolve issues through consensus.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing documentation: BOMs, Routers, Manufacturing Instructions, work orders, etc. Create and maintain production routers.
  • Proficient in CAD software, such as AutoCAD and SolidWorks, to generate engineering drawings.
  • Competent in PC applications including MS Office, AutoCAD, and SolidWorks Design software.
  • Hands-on experience and knowledge of high-density SMT assembly processes.
  • Understanding and experience in developing high-yield soldering processes.
  • Knowledge of Conformal Coating applications.
  • Experience in leading, supervising, or managing technical resources.
  • Proven success in the New Product Introduction (NPI) process, collaborating closely with design engineering on advanced technology products and assembly requirements.
  • Solid experience in monitoring and enhancing manufacturing processes using principles such as SPC, Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, and Kaizen.
  • Knowledgeable in Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and scaling products from NPI to full-volume production.
  • Thorough understanding of related SMT materials and manufacturing processes.
  • Familiarity with advanced packaging and processing strategies for system-in-package devices (SIP) that incorporate high layer count laminates (PCBs) and ceramic substrates, ferrites, flip chips, BGAs, lead-free soldering, MSL, and high current interconnects is a plus.
  • Strong hands-on engineering skills and troubleshooting experience with PCBA production equipment.
  • Excellent writing and organizational skills.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Chemical, or Manufacturing Engineering. A Master's degree and/or MBA is advantageous.
  • 5-8 years of experience in Manufacturing or Process Engineering within an electronics manufacturing environment is required. A minimum of 2 years in a lead, supervisory, or managerial role is preferred.
