Position Overview

The Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist plays a crucial role in delivering services to individuals enrolled in prevention initiatives. This position involves collaboration with educational institutions, community organizations, and various agencies within the region. The focus of these prevention initiatives is to support vulnerable populations by utilizing evidence-based strategies aimed at decreasing substance misuse, enhancing self-esteem, and equipping participants with essential life skills.

Key Responsibilities

1. Training and Certification: Attend necessary training sessions and obtain certifications to effectively implement program curricula.

2. Direct Service Commitment: Ensure that a minimum of 60% of work hours are dedicated to direct service delivery or preparation for such services.

3. Activity Design: Create and organize extracurricular and community service opportunities for participants throughout the year.

4. Group Facilitation: Lead group sessions and collaborate with other service providers and guardians as appropriate.

5. Data Collection: Conduct pre- and post-assessments and gather feedback from participants and their families in a timely manner.

6. Documentation and Reporting: Develop and submit necessary documentation and reports to demonstrate compliance with grant requirements.

7. Program Communication: Regularly communicate program updates and reports to supervisors.

8. Referral Solicitation: Actively seek referrals for program participation from schools, social services, and families.

9. Cross-Program Support: Provide facilitation support in other prevention initiatives as needed.

10. Document Management: Organize and maintain documentation for data entry purposes.

Additional Responsibilities

1. Attendance and Participation: Maintain a satisfactory attendance record, including participation in departmental meetings and training sessions, while ensuring proper notification for absences.

2. Technical Proficiency: Demonstrate a suitable level of technical knowledge relevant to the position.

3. Work Output: Produce the necessary volume of work to meet job expectations.

4. Team Collaboration: Work effectively within a team, keeping colleagues informed and fostering a respectful and cooperative environment.

5. Professional Communication: Maintain effective verbal and written communication with peers, clients, and supervisors, demonstrating diplomacy and effective listening skills.

6. Adaptability: Show willingness to embrace new tasks and changes in procedures, taking initiative to identify and address needs.

7. Timely Completion: Complete assigned tasks and meet deadlines without requiring reminders.

8. Accuracy and Conscientiousness: Perform duties with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.

9. Goal Achievement: Meet established goals and objectives as discussed in performance evaluations.

Position Requirements

The Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist is expected to possess a minimum of two years of post-secondary education, preferably in Social Services, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong communication skills (both oral and written), interpersonal abilities, and presentation skills are essential. The candidate must demonstrate the capacity to build rapport with staff, stakeholders, and families. Basic computer skills for documentation purposes are required. Experience working with diverse populations and at-risk youth is essential. Key competencies include cultural awareness, understanding of family dynamics, and program planning skills, along with strong organizational abilities. Flexibility to work evenings and weekends is necessary.
