Job Overview

Position Summary

A Classroom Support Specialist operates within the educational environment, assisting students with developmental challenges and significant behavioral issues. This role involves direct interaction with students, often on a one-on-one basis, to foster independence in communication, self-care, social interactions, and daily living skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure a safe, clean, and supportive atmosphere that adheres to all standards set by Heartspring.
  • Maintain a structured setting for students by following a planned schedule that enhances learning opportunities and promotes independent living skills.
  • Execute and document training programs for students as outlined in their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) or informal home training initiatives.
  • Contribute to the Student Support Plan (SSP) by implementing and documenting strategies as directed by the psychology department.
  • Facilitate and document specialized training in targeted areas as determined by the multidisciplinary team (e.g., Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy).
  • Accompany students to off-campus activities, including special events, field trips, and medical appointments.
  • Assist with non-violent crisis intervention techniques as necessary.
  • Follow all protocols as specified in the Safe and Positive Approaches (NCI) training.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, educators, team members, supervisors, and all stakeholders involved in the students' educational programs.
  • Document and report any health issues, whether chronic (e.g., diabetes, seizures) or acute (e.g., cuts, bruises).
  • Report any instances of abuse, neglect, or unusual occurrences, in accordance with Heartspring and Child & Family Services guidelines.
  • Regular and punctual attendance is mandatory.
  • Availability to work on major holidays that fall on weekdays and one weekend per month in residential settings is required.
  • Assist in onboarding and training new Classroom Support Specialists.
  • Provide consistent verbal encouragement to students throughout the day.
  • Support students during lunchtime.
  • Ensure the safety and security of students during emergencies (e.g., fire, severe weather) both on-site and in the community.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are preferred for transporting students.
  • Completion of all required orientation and training provided by Heartspring staff is necessary.
  • 18 hours of in-service training must be completed annually.
  • All missed training sessions, classes, and meetings must be made up promptly.
  • Maintain annual NCI certification.
  • Maintain CPR certification.
