Position Summary
A Classroom Support Specialist operates within the educational environment, assisting students with developmental challenges and significant behavioral issues. This role involves direct interaction with students, often on a one-on-one basis, to foster independence in communication, self-care, social interactions, and daily living skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure a safe, clean, and supportive atmosphere that meets or exceeds the standards established by Heartspring.
- Maintain a structured setting for students by adhering to a schedule of activities that enhances learning opportunities and promotes independent living skills.
- Execute and document the training programs for students as outlined in their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) or informal training initiatives.
- Contribute to the Student Support Plan (SSP) by implementing and documenting strategies as directed by the psychology department.
- Provide specialized training in targeted areas as specified by the interdisciplinary teams, including Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Speech Therapy.
- Accompany students to off-campus activities, such as field trips and healthcare appointments.
- Assist in managing non-violent behavior interventions during crisis situations as necessary.
- Follow all protocols and techniques as detailed in the Safe and Positive Approaches (NCI) training.
- Effectively communicate with students, parents, educators, team members, supervisors, and all stakeholders involved in the students' educational programs.
- Document and report any health concerns, whether chronic or acute, and any instances of abuse or neglect according to Heartspring and Child & Family Services guidelines.
- Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
- Work on major holidays that occur on weekdays and fulfill weekend duties in residential settings as scheduled.
- Assist in the orientation and training of new Classroom Support Specialists.
- Provide positive reinforcement to students throughout the day.
- Support students during lunchtime.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of students during emergencies, whether on campus or in the community.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record preferred for transporting students.
- Completion of all mandatory orientation and training provided by Heartspring staff is required.
- 18 hours of in-service training must be completed annually.
- Make up any missed training sessions in a timely manner.
- Maintain annual NCI certification.
- Maintain CPR certification.
