Job Summary

UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is seeking a skilled Medical Laboratory Professional to support the Automated Testing Laboratory. This role involves working in a dynamic team environment, providing high-quality laboratory services to patients and their families.

Key Responsibilities
  • Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, and quality assurance protocols.
  • Collect and process specimens for analysis, ensuring accuracy and precision in a timely manner.
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures, recognizing critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results.
  • Identify problems with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results and take corrective action.
  • Process specimens for analysis, entering accurate patient demographic information and laboratory test orders into the laboratory information system.
  • Independently perform Moderately Complex or Waived tests, with High Complexity testing performed under the oversight of a Medical Lab Scientist or with result review by a Supervisor or Manager.
  • Meet established testing protocols for precision and accuracy, recognizing critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results.
  • Perform and document Quality Control according to established protocols, informing supervisory personnel and/or pathologists of any unusual or problematic incidents.
  • Operate and maintain equipment within the scope of training, utilizing defined schedules and written instructions to perform quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration.
  • Monitor and maintain supplies for functions the position is responsible for, using materials and reagents cost-effectively.
  • Demonstrate dependability, reliability, and independent judgment, recognizing priorities to accommodate department needs and acceptance of appropriate authority.
  • Follow all biohazard, chemical, and sharps safety guidelines, maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Honor confidentiality of patient information, following all compliance guidelines.
  • Assist with the training and orienting of new employees, students, and residents, using established competency and workstation operational guidelines.
Requirements
  • Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification preferred.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a laboratory science from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum 1 year's experience in a hospital laboratory preferred, with familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems.
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting, Act 33, Act 34, and Act 73 FBI Clearance required.
